Cursed Daughters

A young woman must shake off a family curse and the widely held belief that she is the reincarnation of her dead cousin in this wickedly funny, brilliantly perceptive novel about love, female rivalry, and superstition from the author of the smash hit My Sister, the Serial Killer ("A bombshell of a book. . . . Sharp, explosive, hilarious." New York Times) When Ebun gives birth to her daughter, Eniiyi, on the day they bury her cousin Monife, there is no denying the startling resemblance between the child and the dead woman. So begins the belief, fostered and fanned by the entire family, that Eniiyi is the actual reincarnation of Monife, fated to follow in her footsteps in all ways, including that tragic end. There is also the matter of the family curse: "No man will call your house his home. And if they try, they will not have peace..." which has been handed down from generation to generation, breaking hearts and causing three generations of abandoned Falodun women to live under the same roof. When Eniiyi falls in love with the handsome boy she saves from drowning, she can no longer run from her familys history. As several women in her family have done before, she ill-advisedly seeks answers in older, darker spiritual corners of Lagos, demanding solutions. Is she destined to live out the habitual story of love and heartbreak? Or can she break the pattern once and for all, not only avoiding the spiral that led Monife to her lonely death, but liberating herself from all the family secrets and unspoken traumas that have dogged her steps since before she could remember? Cursed Daughters is a brilliant cocktail of modernity and superstition, vibrant humor and hard-won wisdom, romantic love and familial obligation. With its unforgettable cast of characters, it asks us what it means to be given a second chance and how to live both wisely and well with what weve been given.

I‘ve read The Correspondent and after swearing I wasn‘t going to buy any books for a while I discovered the local bookstore had a 25% off sale so I‘m officially ready for #wintercamplitsy

BarbaraBB Wow that‘s such good news!! 4d
squirrelbrain And if that‘s your New Year‘s resolution, you haven‘t broken it as it‘s still this year, so you‘re fine! 😝 4d

BookishMarginalia I have absolutely zero ability to resist books 4d
Suet624 @BookishMarginalia I understand. I really need to in 2026 because A) I have a small apartment and things are getting out of hand and B) I‘ll be getting $500 less a month in income over the next year. So I really have to figure out how to rein in my book desires 😊 4d
kspenmoll That‘s a huge discount on new books! 3d

#BookReport

Three very different books read this week. A friend asked me to read Awake. I went in not knowing very much and thought it was going to lean in a way I wouldn‘t like but thankfully it didn‘t so I didn‘t hate it. Really enjoyed the tagged and Nightmare was ok.

#TOBLonglist

I was going to start with the 4 I own but then library holds started popping up. I really enjoyed this story of a Nigerian family and the curse that rules the lives of the women. At times I did say “just talk about it” out loud but otherwise I was all in. 4 🌟

Deblovestoread @BarbaraBB it‘s been so long since I read My Sister but I think I like this a bit more. 1mo

The 4 #ToB books I have already on my shelves to be read.

I have read 11 off the list. 70 is far too many for me to think on so I am going to read the ones already on my TBR and read through the list and see if anything catches my fancy. Many of them have very low reader ratings and I just don't want to waste my time.

BarbaraBB I am interested in all four of these. I am looking forward to all reviews the coming months! 1mo
squirrelbrain I loved the Desai but bailed on Katabasis. I have the other two on my shelves (well, 1 on my shelf, 1 on my Kindle!) 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

How much are the hands of fate pulling our strings; how much agency do we have over our own trajectory? This was an immersive read of family curses, self-fulfilling prophecies, and generational patterns. I felt most drawn to Monife‘s character. The audiobook narration enhanced the story. 🎧

It's a soft pick, since it's not what I loved Braithwaite's books for. But I guess she will reach a wider audience with this title. It's a family story and works like any other family story. Just include a curse. My favorite character was the dog big time. The ending added an extra star for me to the story.
