The highly anticipated new novel. When a young single woman in Tokyo decides she's ready to sell anything--even her womb--to escape the precarity of her life, an agency pairs her with a wealthy couple desperate to have a child. The match seems made in heaven. She even looks a little like the wife. But is anything ever that simple? Nothing has ever gone right for Riki. She left her boring hometown in Hokkaido, where she worked at a nursing home, for a better life in Tokyo. But as a temp in the big city she has no job security, and barely scrapes by. She eats the same old discount boiled egg for lunch every day, sometimes for dinner, too. Many of her peers have to take on a side hustle just to make ends meet. So when her friend discovers an agency offering a hefty sum for egg donation, both leap at the chance for an interview. Meanwhile, former ballet star Motoi Kusaoke and his wife, Yuko, have been trying to conceive for years. After trying what feels like every available option, it seems futile--until Motoi dives deep into his research and learns that, while surrogacy is technically illegal in Japan, there is a company that's found a loophole. Before long, everyone has an opinion on the matter: from Yuko's sex-obsessed, asexual best friend, to Motoi's controlling prima ballerina mother, and even the affable sex-worker-slash-therapist that Riki has been to a couple of times, after she accepted a down-payment to be a surrogate. Acutely funny and addictively page-turning, Swallows pulls at the seams of society, reassessing our understanding of motherhood, self-worth, bodily autonomy, and class. What does it mean to be "in control"? And can money really buy happiness?

This book is completely different from Out, that I loved. I was a bit disappointed by the story about a surrogate mother and all persons involved in the pregnancy and the circumstances surrounding it.
It‘s a story about women‘s choices in how to live their life, I can imagine it being a big theme in today‘s Japan. But to me it felt like a story I‘ve read before.

ChaoticMissAdventures I didn't connect the author! I loved Out. Even if this is completely different it makes me excited now to pick it up. 1mo
Cathythoughts Oh dear ! I thought it sounded promising… 1mo
LeahBergen Did you get a new kokeshi doll on this trip? 😀 1mo

BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes @Bookwormjillk Out too is about women taking charge of their lives, but that one is more of a thriller and quite original I thought. 1mo

Pickpick

Next up from the #ToB26 long list, it‘s another I wouldn‘t have picked up otherwise. This one is about surrogacy in Japan. Kirino not only gives details into the process of IVF/surrogacy but the cultural context as well. Readers see the the characters‘ feelings about providing the service but also those of the characters seeking a surrogate to carry a child. I listened to the audio which was good! An interesting read I‘ll be thinking about.

BarbaraBB Interesting. I am reading this one right now. 1mo

Didn‘t love this one about a couple in modern day Japan who hires a down-on-her-luck woman to be a surrogate mother. One unlikeable character after another plus not much plot. A total meh for me.

Amor4Libros Too bad this one didn't work for you, I really liked it. What did you think of the ending? 1mo
squirrelbrain Oh dear! 😬 1mo

BarbaraBB I just started this one. Are you reading from the ToB list on purpose or coincidentally? 1mo

Pickpick

A story that gives you so much to think about. Riki becomes a surrogate for Motoi and Yuko, mostly because she is tired of struggling in Tokyo. All parties go into this believing that it would just be a business transaction, but so much more comes into play.

Loved this book! The ending was not what I expected, which made me love this even more.

Can't wait to read more from this author.
