Newspaper Blackout | Austin Kleon
5 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Poet and cartoonist Austin Kleon has discovered a new way to read between the lines. Armed with a daily newspaper and a permanent marker, he constructs through deconstructioneliminating the words he doesn't need to create a new art form: Newspaper Blackout poetry. Highly original, Kleon's verse ranges from provocative to lighthearted, and from moving to hysterically funny, and undoubtedly entertaining. The latest creations in a long history of "found art," Newspaper Blackout will challenge you to find new meaning in the familiar and inspiration from the mundane.Newspaper Blackout contains original poems by Austin Kleon, as well as submissions from readers of Kleon's popular online blog and a handy appendix on how to create your own blackout poetry.

I am in the midst of a “news hangover”. I know I should turn it off, but can‘t. And everything having to do with arming teachers, etc——it‘s really weighing me down. To the point where I think it‘s pushing me into a reading slump. Do current events affect anyone else this way??

GarthRanzz I‘m a news junkie. Have been since I could read. But lately I can‘t take it. Arming teachers, and giving them a bonus for carrying a gun to school, has been too much. I feel like I‘m living in the movie Idiocracy. 6y
AmberWB @GarthRanzz Yes! We‘ve been making that comparison since last November. 😑 I am a teacher. I love teaching, as exhausting as it is. But if this all comes to pass, and they arm us, even if I don‘t have to carry a gun, I will quit immediately. And that thought breaks my heart. 6y
AmyG I‘m a news junkie, too. I just gave up. I am watching Grace & Frankie. (edited) 6y

Kaye Yes, I used to keep up with the news continually. Now, I‘ve taken all my news apps off and I don‘t watch it on tv. Too doggone depressing. I try to keep my nose in a book as much as possible. There are times when Ignorance really is Bliss. (edited) 6y
mrozzz Yes of course... my boss luckily likes to vent throughout the day. It‘s less overwhelming that way. 6y
LikelyLibrarian Yes, and this week‘s news cycle is the worst. I‘ve yelled at the TV and argued with my own husband. As a teacher, I‘m especially horrified by school shootings, but the arguments about arming teachers - and paying them to do it!!! 🤯😡😭 6y
Samplergal Yes! I worked in schools for 40 yrs and this is terrifying for me. I‘d quit before using a gun. What are we doing to the kids? So sick of trump dismantling everything we stand for. Just like pre-war Germany. Be careful out there. 6y
Samplergal @AmyG and what a joy it is! Love lily tomlin. 6y

"Origins are easy to come by. More so than dreams." --Newspaper Blackout, Austin Kleon

Started some books today and I like them. Going to continue with the blue exorcist series tonight though?. How is everyone liking litsy. It's not the best I feel but it's alright. Also I highly recommend Newspaper Blackout if you liked Vicious by V.E. Schwab. What are you currently reading? And do you read manga?
