An adventure tale with dire consequences hanging over Jim‘s head. Huck comes to terms with the unjust enslavement of Jim. Tom Sawyer‘s character is a romantic putz with no moral character. Percival Everett has a book about Jim coming out next year, “James”. I wanted to refresh my memory before then.

I don‘t know why I put this read off so long. Twain‘s understanding of this young man‘s journey is bright, funny, and heartfelt. ‘Twas a joy.

Jo-eese Tomorrow is launch day for An Innocence of Means by Jennifer Oakley Denslow this is a French historical novel set during the days when women could be owned. It is a riches to rags story of a strong woman who travels it all with her self-worth intact. Good read. 5y

Mehso-so

While I liked the book, at times the racist language bothered me terribly. While I realize it was a “sign of the times” for Mark Twain to write in this manner, some days it was too much.

Redy2trvl I wonder how I would feel about reading Mark Twain now as an adult. As a child, I “think” I liked his novels because I was expected to. Not sure that would be the case now. 6y
Samplergal @Redy2trvl exactly. I read him as a child and was actually looking forward to re-reading. 😲. Not the same. 6y
Gezemice I enjoyed this one a lot, lots of funny bits. I know what you mean, it is peppered with the n-word, however overall it is not racist, quite the contrary - Twain takes a stand against slavery and racism. 6y

Day 11!

My misunderstood book is probably one of the most misunderstood books in American history right now. I chose it because when I was told to read it in the 10th grade, my teacher confiscated my personal copy of the book when I chose to read the uncensored version while the class read the censored version.

If you lie or censor history, it‘ll always be doomed to repeat itself.

Tamra Wow, what an unenlightened teacher. 6y
wanderinglynn I‘d have to ask that teacher, why assign it if you won‘t let your students read the original version? I mean, if you‘re afraid that parents will complain, then don‘t assign it. 6y
BiblioTori The entire grade level was reading it. So four teachers met and decided to censor it, even though no students complained. I feel like you miss a lot when you read censored books. For the record, only the ‘n-word‘ was censored. Other slurs were left in the book. The same school liked to mark out curse words in library books with a Sharpie. @Tamra @wanderinglynn 6y
