Ashs Cabin
Ashs Cabin | Jen Wang
3 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Ash has always felt alone. Adults ignore the climate crisis. Other kids Ashs age are more interested in pop stars and popularity contests than in fighting for change. Even Ashs family seems to be sleepwalking through life. The only person who ever seemed to get Ash was their Grandpa Edwin. Before he died, he used to talk about building a secret cabin, deep in the California wilderness. Did he ever build it? What if its still there, waiting for him to come back...or for Ash to find it? To Ash, that maybe-mythical cabin is starting to feel like the perfect place for a fresh start and an escape from the miserable feeling of alienation that haunts their daily life. But making the wilds your home isnt easy. And as much as Ash wants to be alone...can they really be happy alone? Can they survive alone? From New York Timesbestselling author and illustrator Jen Wang comes a singularly affecting story about self-discovery, self-reliance, and the choice to live when it feels like you have no place in the world.

Follow Ash as they prepare to run away and live in a cabin their grandpa built in the woods (if it exists). Beautifully illustrated and told. My adult perspective on this book (worried about the logistics of Ash‘s safety and their family‘s fear and grief for their missing teen) is probably a lot different than how teens would experience the book. #Survival

A thoughtful exploration of identity, in the form of a beautiful graphic novel. Ash‘s story about finding their grandpa‘s secret cabin in the woods, and their attempt at starting a new life of their own far from family and friends had me shedding tears. 😭

A survival story that flips the script on what survival looks like for each of us. I was on the edge of my seat during Ash‘s adventure (especially at the end!) and my heart hurt for their hurt. I loved this solitary adventure surviving in the wild! 🌲
