The Heather Blazing
The Heather Blazing: A Novel | Colm Toibin
2 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Colm Tóibín’s second “lovely, understated” novel that “proceeds with stately grace” (The Washington Post Book World) about an uncompromising judge whose principles, when brought home to his own family, are tragic. Eamon Redmond is a judge in Ireland’s high court, a completely legal creature who is just beginning to discover how painfully unconnected he is from other human beings. With effortless fluency, Colm Tóibín reconstructs the history of Eamon’s relationships—with his father, his first “girl,” his wife, and the children who barely know him—and he writes about Eamon’s affection for the Irish coast with such painterly skill that the land itself becomes a character. The result is a novel of stunning power, “seductive and absorbing” (USA Today).

I picked up two books from my local second hand bookshop today. Both authors Bernhard Schlink and Colm Toibin I know, but I have not heard of the books. The one by Bernard Schlink is set in Sydney. This is also my latest sewing project on the go again now that the days are cooling down ❄️😍

Crazeedi Beautiful! 3mo

Freespirit Thanks @BooknerdsLife this quilt is by Jen Kingwell. She is a very well known Australian quilter, and I did it as a block of the month. Her work is amazing. Nice to do at my own pace also. I also have books to read😂😂 3mo
Freespirit @Crazeedi I love making things. I used to do a lot of sewing when my children were young. Now I make 1-2 quilts a year. It's a lovely hobby. I have made some great friends through it also. When I retire I will do more...I hope😊 3mo
Crazeedi @Freespirit just very cool, do you stitch pieces by hand or machine? 3mo
Freespirit Mostly hand piecing...some machine and then I always hand quilt. I find it relaxing @Crazeedi 3mo

Pickpick

I enjoyed this one very much. Toibin writes so honest, his personages are so real. Nothing much happens, it is just those people and the way they think and act. Not too nice, not too perfect, just very very human.
This is the story of an Irish judge, a very introvert man, who doesn't really realize he needs other people until it is too late. Or almost. #1001books Read it on the day of the British Brexit referendum.
