Hardcore Self Help
Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety | Robert Duff, Ph.d.
7 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety is for those of us that find the prospect of reading a traditional self help book to be way too boring. How are you supposed to make positive change in your life if the book itself feels like a chore? This book is definitely not a chore. In Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety, I talk to you like a friend. There is lots of swearing and humor and also loads of helpful and actionable information. You learn about anxiety and how to find the weapons within yourself to slay it for good.

1 - just reading - I can honestly say that‘s it (though obviously I do this quite a lot!)
2 - reading! Actually having some time alone which hardly ever happens
3 - ironing! Checking emails.....but it‘s my last day in tomorrow until Jan 3 - so that will keep me going!
4 - I try and do that regularly
This was a great idea - it‘s easy to get lost in looking after everyone else ❤️

laurieluna I love that you put ironing. Seems like a chore to some but theres nothing more satisfying than sticking on the radio and seeing that pile go down. And yey for one last working day! 🙌 xxx 6y

This gave some really good advice on how to make progress in dealing with anxiety. It doesn't promise a cure, just tools to help manage when your in a bind. Helpful information.

#selfhelp and a little #mothersruin.

If you dont mind nerds and bad language and suffer from #anxiety (or know anyone who does), please give this a try. It's short and available as an ebook, audio, or physical, and is packed with advice and support. Absolutely perfect for a person like me.

I treated myself to an early payday gift in light of my first dentist appointment in 8 years. No regrets. Only a little way in and it is perfect for me!

How do my fellow Littens feel about self-help books?! Any you like, any you hate? Full Disclosure: I'm obsessed. For me, there's nothing more delightfully indulgent than trying to sort out all the ways in which I'm f*cked up 😏

rachel_mbc I love Gretchen Rubin's Better Than Before, and her podcast! I should read her other two happiness books, but haven't yet. 8y
Yournewfriendsams @rachel_mbc I LOVED The Happiness Project. It changed my life for like six months...and then I was distracted😬...but still, loved it! Thanks for the reco!! I'll definitely be checking out the podcast ☺️ 8y

AbstractMonica I can't get into them for some reason...I tried reading Big Magic a while back , but I couldn't stay interested 😕 8y
mauveandrosysky I'm typically turned off by them, but maybe I've just never come across the right ones because I like learning about all the ways I'm fucked up, too! I think, traditionally, I've turned to general philosophy, psychology and sociology books for this reason, rather than those that are labeled "self-help." 8y
Yournewfriendsams @AbstractMonica @mauveandrosysky I totally get why they could turn you off. They're essentially the philosophy, psychology, sociology etc. etc. books for the common man. And I will admit some are repetitive, like the author has one good idea and then spends 200+ pages talking about it 😫 Recently, I really liked. WIthin recommended by the wellness goddess herself, Gwyneth Paltrow 😬 8y
LibrarianJen I stay away from them because I do have anxiety and chronic depression ain't with some other stuff. If I read self help books I tend to get paranoid and more anxious/depressed. That being said, I like to read books about what other people have experienced like memoirs of people with ailments. 8y
Zelma I like them, but in the guise of memoir (like (Gretchen Rubin's books). I want the author to explore and analyze the issues/recommendations rather than just lecture to me as a reader. 8y
Notafraidofwords @LibrarianJen I totally agree with you. What I dislike about self help books is that they are talking to one sort of person : working class or middle class people that can afford yoga and taking time off work. 8y
Yournewfriendsams @Notafraidofwords Ha! I totally see what you're saying. In other words: Goop Readers 😂 8y
LauraBrook I like them, and prefer memoiry type ones. There are a lot out there, though, that have one good idea that they just repeat for the length of the book. Those are no bueno. 8y
