A 2014 Michael L. Printz Honor Book! In Sally Gardners stunning novel, set in a ruthless regime, an unlikely teenager risks all to expose the truth about a heralded moon landing. What if the football hadnt gone over the wall. On the other side of the wall there is a dark secret. And the devil. And the Moon Man. And the Motherland doesnt want anyone to know. But Standish Treadwell who has different-colored eyes, who cant read, cant write, Standish Treadwell isnt bright sees things differently than the rest of the "train-track thinkers." So when Standish and his only friend and neighbor, Hector, make their way to the other side of the wall, they see what the Motherland has been hiding. And its big...One hundred very short chapters, told in an utterly original first-person voice, propel readers through a narrative that is by turns gripping and darkly humorous, bleak and chilling, tender and transporting.

#AnglophileApril Day 22: Fats‘ review: “This dystopian tale is set in the 1950s, post-war, in a place called Motherland that functions under a totalitarian rule. Standish Treadwell is a boy with different-colored eyes. This makes him an easy target for bullying, especially from a group of students led by Hans Fielder.” Hence, a lot of #BoysDontCry moments. ”The storytelling is raw and haunting.“ Her review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-7fo

Sally Gardner is my all time favorite author and once again she stuns me with this gem of literature. It‘s honestly a little confusing at first but the detail in the end is magnificent and I would recommend to anybody who likes books about fictional war and so called “higher powers” controlling the lower class men. It‘s kind of like the hunger games without the games just the screwed up upper class. #sallygardner #maggotmoon

2016, Book 30 "I'm taking you to the land of Croca-Colas," I say.

"Remember? We are going to drive one of those big Cardillacs."

"What colour is it?" he asks, and this worries me. Hector should remember. We talked about it often enough.

"Sky blue," I say.

He coughs. Not a good sound. Too deep, too full of coffins.

Why is mankind so fucking cruel?

Why?"
