An intriguing glimpse at the earliest days of data science and attempts to apply it to track, predict and manipulate human behavior. The Simulmatics Corporation was ahead of its time in terms of its goals and its complete lack of ethical considerations; the story of the company's rise and fall touches on themes of privacy and ethics that are more relevant than ever today.

We take for granted now that computers will utilize our data to attempt to (and often succeed at) control our behavior. When using data to simulate human responses was introduced by the Simulmatics Corporation in the 1950s and 60s, it was revolutionary. They had a hand in politics, advertising, and even an office in #Vietnam to try to influence the war outcome. This book is fascinating.

Librarybelle I so enjoyed her book about on Jane Franklin, which means I want to read every book she has written! 3y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle She‘s a great writer! This book in the wrong hands would have been an insomnia remedy, but she makes it so compelling. I‘ll definitely be reading more from her! 3y

I had no idea of the origin of the term news flash. And homing pigeons! 😂

This book‘s title/subtitle do it a terrible disservice. They make it sound beyond boring and it‘s so good!

Texreader I had no idea! Fascinating! 3y
ValerieAndBooks I‘m currently reading These Truths by her and it‘s good! So I definitely will stack this one! 3y
Hooked_on_books @ValerieAndBooks She‘s such a good writer! I‘m reading the 2020 NBA nonfiction longlist and otherwise I would never have picked this one up. I don‘t think it‘s received the attention it deserves, sadly. 3y

A really interesting read, examining both the individuals involved in the Simulmatics Corporation and it‘s influence (or sometimes lack thereof) on elections, the Vietnam War, and modern social networking.

Milara It made me incredibly curious. What methods could have they used to gather such an amount of data that would enable them to accurately predict anything? Statistics, polls? Surely they didn't cover such a big part of the population to be accurate predictors. And even today predictions based on polls are mistaken 3y
LittlebearReads You‘re totally right! The book actually describes how they faced enormous challenges in gathering representative data, and how they used interviews (especially in Vietnam) to try to do so. 3y
