It's 1930s Mississippi. Magic is permitted only in certain circumstances, and by certain people. Unsanctioned broom racing is banned. But for those who need the money, or the thrills...it's there to be found. Meet Billie Mae, captain of the Night Storms racing team, and Loretta, her best friend and second-in-command. They're determined to make enough money to move out west to a state that allows Black folks to legally use magic and take part in national races. Cheng-Kwan - doing her best to handle the delicate and dangerous double act of being the perfect "son" to her parents, and being true to herself while racing. Mattie and Emma -- Choctaw and Black -- the youngest of the group and trying to dodge government officials who want to send them and their newly-surfaced powers away to boarding school. And Luella, in love with Billie Mae. Her powers were sealed away years ago after she fought back against the government. She'll do anything to prevent the same fate for her cousins. Brooms is a queer, witchy Fast and the Furious that shines light on history not often told - it's everything you'd ever want to read in a graphic novel.

Not gonna lie, I was worried there for a while! This book kept the tension, but it was also chock full of tender moments, embracing diversity, potential, and protective power. The final race had me cheering, the ending had me happy crying. The magic elements were wound so effortlessly into the story the author and artist wanted to tell. Highly recommend. Do NOT miss the scrap book moments at the end, tucked after the important creator's notes.

Set in an alternate 1930s Mississippi where lots of people have magic but African Americans are forbidden from using it, this uplifting graphic novel shows the power of friendship and community against oppression. The six central young women are nonwhite as well as queer, and/or deaf, and/or suffer debilitating joint pain—and they all have positive outcomes. Hooray for the queer creative team who made this great story! #LGBTQ #YA #Comics

I like the way Jasmine Walls includes untranslated Chinese dialogue, while allowing readers like me to understand the gist of what was said based on the English reply.

I loved this graphic novel! I liked the art style and loved the characters. I‘m a little bit confused on the relation between Luella, Mattie and Emma. The story takes place on an alternate timeline where it‘s illegal for Black witches to use the magic. The characters still compete in secret broom racing competitions. 5🌟

A group of girls and women in 1930s Mississippi participate in illegal broom races despite the risks because it's one of the only places they can safely be themselves and perform magic. It's like a fantasy version of A League of Their Own. I'm obsessed.
