Something about this witchy sapphic graphic novel didn't work for me in execution despite the interesting concepts (two young women try to fix the magic that is out of wack in their town and discover it was caused by one of their grandmother's sinister plot beyond the grave) and beautiful art. Too much exposition and not enough action? I'm surprised this won the Lambda award for graphic novels this year.

The opening page establishes setting and introduces us to one of the main characters, Jo. She has a serious /concerned / determined look on her face. Much of the character development is in visual text in this graphic novel, rather than in the word text.

First, I must say that the art in this was wonderful. I love how the colors and movements of nature were depicted. Also, the art really highlighted the ways in which nature interacts with the characters.
That said, the story didn‘t blow me away. I would have liked more definition in the character development. ā¬‡ļø¸

psalva A lot of the backstory for Orla, for example, was hinted at but not fully explained. I do acknowledge that perhaps the style of storytelling just wasn‘t for me on that front. I will say, the relationship between Orla and Jo was really cute, and of course Sìth, the cat familiar, was a highlight. 13mo
