This is an intricately woven bundle of shifting loyalties and gruesome ends, as well as noble intentions and deep love. The humor and warmth the reader learns to have for some truly dodgy characters is a revelation. Overall, great fun.

This was my reminder to check in on Tchaikovsky's work more often. He's so prolific that he went off and wrote a whole series without me noticing. This is fantasy for Adults, complex themes, political and magical shenanigans, excellent world building, dark but not grimdark. I always enjoy his characters, and I trust him to write female characters very well. I'm not a huge fan of multi-pov but he is such a skilled writer he pulls it off. 4.5 stars
Hoping this will bring hours of entertainment as it cost a small fortune #CityOfLastChances#AdrianTchaikovsky
The writing is superb.
The story revolves around a city on the edge & you learn about this alternate world/city from a variety of characters. The politics of this world are interesting & everywhere. I‘m hoping it‘s the start of a series.
This has a ton of characters, main/minor & everyone has a POV but none realllly stayed with me so I‘m hoping that book two has a significant amount of character development.

Went to Goldsboro Books and may have overdone it a little. But TWO OF THESE ARE SOLD OUT ONLINE, and the Adrian Tchaikovsky was the only one in the shop. Every time I scrolled past it on the website, I was like 😢😢😢😢
An occupied magical city on the cusps of revolution
With the book‘s shifting, bird‘s-eye POV, it reads a bit like a script for a play. You get dropped right in, with no hand-holding. I trust this author, so when I got confused at the start, I backtracked instead of DNF-ing; after I read 20% of the book to get the feel for the—oh so many—characters, I then read it again from the beginning, this time enjoying it greatly
Worth it. So worth it.
5/5
I was starting to get worried about my December Goldsboro box, because once January hit I still hadn't received it - but today it arrived! 💕📚 I think this is one of the most beautiful books they've ever sent! Look at that cover! Those page edges! 😍😱 Plus the story sounds amazing! #goldsboro #goldsborobooks
@RaeLovesToRead Isn't this who we were recently talking about?! Didn't you just meet him?!

Presents from Santa Part 1 🥰
Went to an event at Waterstones. Adrian Tchaikovsky in conversation with an old school friend 😊 He was really interesting and I'm so impressed by how many books he's written!
Looking forward to checking out his fantasy writing.
Also need to find out where my copy of Children of Ruin is... it's got to be in my bedroom somewhere... 🤔
