In Nazi-occupied Warsaw before the outbreak of World War II, American journalist Christopher de Monti is wined and dined by German officers eager for sympathetic coverage. A novel inspired by real events and based on meticulous research into pre-WWII Warsaw, Mila 18 is the story of a sacrifice that had real meaning and will forever be remembered. . . . A fine and important novel (The New York Times). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Leon Uris including rare photos from the authors estate.

Written in 1961, this is Leon Uris's epic work, based on real events that occurred in WWII. It‘s is a heartbreaking tale that “covers the Nazi occupation of Poland and the atrocities of systematically dehumanising and eliminating the Jewish people of Poland. The name "Mila 18" is taken from the headquarters bunker of Jewish resistance fighters underneath the building at ulica Miła 18 (18 Mila Street, in English, 18 Pleasant Street).”

Freespirit I haven't read this, but many years ago I read Trinity and Exodus and remember they were amazing! 4y
suvata @Freespirit Yeah, he‘s a pretty amazing author 4y

This book was published in 1961 & I think the writing & dialogue shows its age. Leon Uris writes with a heavy hand and though he brings to light one of the darkest times in modern history this book wasn‘t as emotionally gripping as I had expected. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising dispels the myth that all European Jews were carted off like lambs to slaughter. This book is fictionalized, based on actual people & events👇🏼

Cinfhen The brave men and women who choose to fight and take up arms were modern day warriors: using smarts, determination, resilience and inner strength to battle the Nazi war machine. Sadly, the characterization here was more one dimensional. 👇🏼 4y
Cinfhen Nancy Spielberg produced Who Will Write Our History a film about a group of ordinary Polish Jews who took it upon themselves to preserve & archive daily life in Poland between 1939-1944. Its brutal & breathtaking in its scope of raw eye witness accounts & historical accuracy. https://youtu.be/or-9RHm_Owg

This book is bringing back lots of memories from my recent trip to Poland. This isn‘t a piece of fiction, it‘s a piece of history, that happened only 75 years ago. Brick wall is the only remaining wall left from the actual Warsaw Ghetto. The Germans attempted to burn the ghetto, block by block killing 13,000 in the process after 300,000 were sent to Concentration Camp & 250,000 died from starvation, disease or beatings within the ghetto walls👇🏼

Cinfhen The bottom photo is a statue of Janusz Korczak who ran the Jewish Orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto. He and all the children were sent to Treblinka and gassed to death.

It's been just few seconds I have completed reading this book and I can't stop myself writing the review. This book has everything. History, war, sacrifice, death, defeat, fight, revenge, religion, faith, friendship, love, and victory! It shows how Jews were treated during the World War ll. It shows us how the Nazi army trained themselves to fight in the war and how they killed people. It is a disturbing story, but it's the truth. So please read!

I can't believe how underappreciated this book is! #LeonUris can make history exciting and moving like few can. More people know him from his epic novel #Exodus about the formation of modern-day Israel after WW2, but this intimate tale of Jewish rebellion in the Polish ghetto is so riveting and intense, you can't put it down.

Amazed and awed and humbled by this book. It is part of the topic of defiance and disobedience that I made a point to read more on this year and so far the very best one out of those books. The kind of Book that stays with you for a long time. Think I will make a visit to Warsaw soon to pray my tributes #jewishresistance #warsawghetto #leonuris #mila18

Probably one of the most profound and heartbreaking books I've ever had the honor to read - I still have about 100 pages to go and no illusion about its ending but damn. Should be required reading in our schools in Germany.

TrishB Stacking for a later date! Read some many WW2 books recently I'm having a bit of a break! 7y
ReadingTraveller @TrishB if you can definitely read it at a later point though it is of course heartbreaking 7y

minkyb I am the kind of reader who gets on a roll when she likes an author so I would have read them close together. @EvieBee84 I remember Trinity the most. (edited) 7y

I remember crying so much at the end of this book I read so many years ago. It's based on the uprising in the ghetto of Warsaw during nazi occupation in WWII. It was my father's book and #publishedinthe60s #aprilbookshowers

Breathtaking period piece. A true to life glimpse into a notoriosly low point of modern human history, the Holocaust. Offering readers a vivid and rare glimpse into the raw power and range of the human spirit.

#septphotochallenge #NumberInTitle #Funfact: Did you know if not for this book, we would all be going around saying "Catch 18" instead of "Catch 22?" That was Heller's working title but he changed it when this book was announced. Uris was huge then and the publishers didn't want to compete with him. Hell of a catch. Mila 18 is quite good. The writing's a bit dated, but it's a memorable and gripping account of the Warsaw Uprising. @RealLifeReading
