Titanium Noir
Titanium Noir: A Novel | Nick Harkaway
4 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
"Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he's called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he is surprised at first to see that the victim appears to be a rather typical, milquetoast techie. But on closer inspection, he finds the victim is over seven feet tall. And even though he doesn't look a day over thirty, he is actually ninety years old. Clearly, he is a Titan-one of this dystopian, near-future society's genetically-altered elites. There are only a few thousand Titans worldwide, all thanks to Stefan Tonfamecasca's discovery of the controversial T7 genetic therapy, which elevated his family to near godlike status. A dead Titan is big news . . . a murdered Titan is unimaginable. But Titans are Cal's specialty. In fact, his ex-girlfriend, Athena, is a Titan. And not just any Titan-she's Stefan's daughter, heir to the Tonfamecasca empire. As Cal digs deeper into the murder investigation, he begins to unweave the complicated threads of what should have been a straightforward case, and it soon becomes clear he's on the trail of a crime whose roots run deep into the dark heart of the world. Titanium Noir is a tightly woven, intricate tale of murder, betrayal, and vengeance"--

27/150 I didn't plan to go on a mystery binge, but my last 3 books have all been murder mysteries. Three very different worlds and types of stories. Here its gritty, detective noir, the gumshoe in a world of genetically altered supermen (and women). When a Titan is murdered, Cal Sounder is called in to investigate, which leads, as these things do, to a much larger conspiracy. I liked the gritty feel of this world

RamsFan1963 the clear line between the haves (the Titans) and the have nots (everyone else). I was a little let down by the ending, though it made sense, it pretty much shuts the door on any possible sequel, which is too bad because this is a very intriguing world. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 2mo

I had fun with this. Cal is a detective who is investigating a crime. Titans are the genetically enhanced elite.

This was a fun, fast, noir, PI story with humor & great dialog. The world, politics & premise were all interesting. I finished it in one sitting.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/4

A well executed blend of cyberpunk sci-fi and noir detective fiction. I've not read Chandler or Hammett, but all the tropes seem to be present and correct: the world weary PI, the femme fatale, the corrupt city, and of course the wry, cynical monologue through which everything is portrayed. A bit more cyberpunk would have been nice, and at times the prose is so tightly mannered it sucks away Harkaway's ebullient personality, but well worth a read.

I loved this. It has all the grit, dark humor, and violence of a Raymond Chandler novel or early 1940s Humphrey Bogart noir film, with a Sci-Fi twist to keep it fresh. The Sci-Fi element gave a different flavor to the mafia-esque characters, and a little more room for the author to play with the noir tropes. It‘s a fast read, well-plotted and executed, and highly entertaining. If you‘re a fan of classic noir, don‘t miss this one.

Blaire Fab review! Definitely stacked. 12mo
AlaMich I loved Angelmaker, which was totally bonkers, and this sound intriguing as well. 12mo
