Blue and White Japan
Blue and White Japan | Amy Sylvester Katoh
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Featuring the distinctive style of Amy Sylvester Katoh and the stunning photos of Yutaka Satoh, the expression of blue and white in Japanese design takes myriad forms, from the ephemeral beauty of a wind-blown noren curtain to the geometric boldness of zabuton cushions. These various objects all convey the same lyrical message, inspiring us to rethink ways of collecting, creating, and living with Japanese blue and white.

#Rocktober #WhereTheStreetsHaveNoName This prompt made me think of Japan-especially Tokyo. I spent much time there for work years ago, the address system is complicated & many streets don't have names. I wandered on my days off, travel book in hand, getting lost looking for places like the tagged book's author's store. So many times I received help & was even walked to addresses I was looking for when friendly locals would see me searching! 🇯🇵❤️

Cinfhen #BucketList so cool you got to go! 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Yes! One of my favorite cities & countries to visit. I want to go back, it's been about 15 years. 🤗 You'll be happy to know I helped open the first Starbucks there! ☕️💚 7y
BarbaraBB Oh Japan, I sooo love that country. I visited it in 2015 and still can‘t forget about it. How cool you introduced Starbucks there! 7y

LibrarianRyan I love to do that list wander. 7y
Cinfhen That‘s incredible!!! Is it that long ago? 15 Years of Starbucks!?!?!?! 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Actually the first Starbucks was opened there in August 1996--so 21 years! I just haven't been back in 15 years. 😀 7y
Cinfhen 😮 WOW....I can‘t believe that....that‘s amazing 7y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I love Japan too. It was the first official International Starbucks market (they didn't count Canada as International but Hawaii was the second Int'l market so go figure...) 😉 It was a crazy time but fun and I was lucky to be a part of it. 7y
DebinHawaii @LibrarianRyan I love wandering, the language & lack of easy addresses just made it more interesting. 😆👍 7y

#Day14 #augustphotochallenge #uniquefact Something unique about me is my love for/collection of blue & white Japanese housewares that began 20 years ago when I traveled there to train & help open the market for the 'green coffee giant.' I fell in love w/ the aesthetic & the country & carried pieces home every trip I made. I even got lost for hours in Tokyo trying to find the author's store. Here's just a tiny part of my collection #AugustofPages💙
