City of Orange
City of Orange | David Yoon
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
This imaginative and affecting new novel is beloved, bestselling, and award-winning author David Yoon at his finest: thought-provoking and heart-piercing, by turns funny and challenging, and at all times deeply human. A man who can not remember his own name wakes up in an apocalyptic landscape, injured and alone. He has vague memories of life before, but he can't see it clearly and can't grasp how his current situation came to be. He must learn to survive by finding sources of water and foraging for food. Then he encounters a boy--and he realizes nothing is what he thought it was, neither the past nor the present. City of Orange is a novel that is both harrowing and heartfelt, charged with a speculative energy but grounded in intimate character study. It is a novel about coming to grips with the worst that has befallen us and finding our way home again.

A good premise & excellent twist, but not the execution I was looking for. A good psychological exploration that had a lot of potential but not enough movement in the plot, thus making it feel like the story went on for too long. There is a lot of rambling & frequent flashbacks that made things feel overly disjointed. This makes sense given the confusion the protagonist experiences, but joined with the slow pace it made things a slog.

Bailedbailed

I almost always finish a book, but this one did nothing for me. I gave it a bit over 100 pages and decided to bail. As the saying goes, too many good books, too little time.

With some ruthless editing, this could have been a good novella. It only got interesting around pg 160 (why was I stilll reading at that point? That is my curse.) Up to that point, it was like watching someone else play a video game, a boring one. The story of a solitary, amnesiac man in a desolate landscape, City of Orange alludes to Castaway and the Truman Show, but the closer parallel is The Fisher King. If only the book had made me care.

#NetGalley #NewRelease

Normally this is the type of book I would love, but it took too long for the story to really catch my interest. Starting out with an unidentified man who can't remember anything was intriguing, but until he encounters other people he really is just a flat, boring character. His flashes of memories were at times confusing. However, once he meets the young boy I couldn't stop reading and had to know what happened.

#ARC #PublishesToday I‘m sorry to admit, I bailed on this one - a man awakes with amnesia in a post apocalyptic world. Premise had promise and writing was good but this story just didn‘t hold my interest. Every time I put the book down I had no desire to pick it back up.
I tried to speed read towards the ending, but even that didn‘t work.
4 bails so far this month. Two more books to go….. @TheAromaofBooks hope you‘re enjoying your vacation 💕

Megabooks I hate slow-paced books most of the time. 2y
