The Bitch in the House
The Bitch in the House: 26 Women Tell the Truth About Sex, Solitude, Work, Motherhood, and Marriage | Cathi Hanauer
Virginia Woolf introduced us to the Angel in the House, now prepare to meet... The Bitch In the House. Women today have more choices than at any time in history, yet many smart, ambitious, contemporary women are finding themselves angry, dissatisfied, stressed out. Why are they dissatisfied? And what do they really want? These questions form the premise of this passionate, provocative, funny, searingly honest collection of original essays in which twenty-six women writersranging in age from twenty-four to sixty-five, single and childless or married with children or four times divorcedinvite readers into their lives, minds, and bedrooms to talk about the choices theyve made, whats working, and whats not. With wit and humor, in prose as poetic and powerful as it is blunt and dead-on, these intriguing women offer details of their lives that theyve never publicly revealed before, candidly sounding off on: The difficult decisions and compromises of living with lovers, marrying, staying single and having children The perpetual tug of war between love and work, family and career The struggle to simultaneously care for ailing parents and a young family The myth of co-parenting Dealing with helpless mates and needy toddlers The constrictions of traditional womens roles as well as the cliches of feminism Anger at laid-back live-in lovers content to live off a hardworking womans checkbook Anger at being criticized for ones weight Anger directed at their mothers, right and wrong Andwellmore anger... This book was born out of anger, begins Cathi Hanauer, but the end result is an intimate sharing of experience that will move, amuse, and enlighten. The Bitch in the House is a perfect companion for your students as they plot a course through the many voices of modern feminism. This is the sound of the collective voice of successful women today-in all their anger, grace, and glory. From The Bitch In the House: I believed myself to be a feminist, and I vowed never to fall into the same trap of domestic boredom and servitude that I saw my mother as being fully entrenched in; never to settle for a life that was, as I saw it, lacking independence, authority, and respect. E.S. Maduro, page 5 Here are a few things people have said about me at the office: Youre unflappable. Are you ever in a bad mood? Here are things peopleokay, the members of my familyhave said about me at home: Mommy is always grumpy. Why are you so tense? Youre too mean to live in this house and I want you to go back to work for the rest of your life! Kristin van Ogtrop, page 161 I didnt want to be a bad mother I wanted to be my mother-safe, protective, rational, calm-without giving up all my anger, because my anger fueled me. Elissa Schappell, page 195

I must admit I would never date a guy who didn't have a stable job again either.

26 Women Telling The Truth for today‘s #NovemberByTheNumbers. Has anyone read this one? Good?

RebelReader I have always wanted to read this. Need to get it on the list. Stacked! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebelReader Maybe we should read it together👍 6y
Spiderfelt I'm curious whether the 'truths' in 2003 are different from today's truths. What would a 2nd edition look like? 6y

RebelReader @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm game to read it together! @Spiderfelt That will be interesting, but my gut tells me not that much has changed! ☹️ 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebelReader Sadly, I think you‘re right. @Spiderfelt Sometimes that‘s exactly what makes the older books interesting, what‘s glaringly old fashioned now in retrospect, and what‘s not! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebelReader I‘m booked until after the new year, but if you want we can make a plan for 2018! 6y
RebelReader @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's perfect for me too as I have a huge stack from the library right now AND I have to get the book! 😍 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebelReader Same here, on both counts. 👍 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebelReader I have a few like this on my list, so I think I need to make an effort to read at least one a month next year. 6y

Still making my way through this one. Goal is to finish it before 2017! 🌲Tonight we have a holiday party with our closest friends and a white elephant gift exchange. Considering what a good bookish funny gift would be that I already have on hand. Hmmmm. Anyway, TWIN CITIES LITTENS, please drive safe in the blizzard tonight!! ❄️💨🌨☃️🌬

[DELETED] 1409720085 We are having a CRAZY storm here in south east Idaho. I'm scared to drive! 7y

Remember those nice things I said about my daughter yesterday? Well, today I'm tempted to make my #recommendsday not to have children. 😉 The middle school years sure are a roller coaster. After sending them to bed tonight, I'm going to lose myself but good in a book!

Texreader Yes yes yes. I've got a middle schooler too. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Fortunately today was a good day. 8y
Megabooks I was awful to my mom in middle school! I'm sorry. ☹️ Not a particularly good age. 8y
Beckys_Books I have a 16 year old and still struggle. One of these days she will surely be a bit more mature. 8y

Karen3 So been there but I'm finding high school senior year with a boy to be just as rough. I'm sure it's karma's way of making me not be too sad when he leaves for college next year lol. 8y
DebinHawaii Hang in there! 😬 8y
LitHousewife @Texreader @Beckys_Books @karen3 I see all these parents sad to be dropping their children off at college. Personally? I'd throw a party. That being said, with my luck they won't go to college... 😂 8y
LitHousewife @Ebooksandcooks I've apologized to my parents for all of my selfishness. Parenting does open your eyes to how good your own parents were. 🙂 8y
LitHousewife @DebinHawaii Thank you! Tomorrow is another day. 🙂 8y
Bookgirl Ohhhh do I relate. 14 year old and 11 year old in this house. Roller coaster!!! 8y
MeganAnn 😂 pretty sure my mom would have said the same thing when I was a teenager. Looking back I can see how awful I was! 😳 8y
KVanRead Right there with you! 13 and 15 yo girls and we are now all on the same cycle!!! Cuz Mother Nature thinks that frickin hilarious apparently. This place is a total hormone factory. Still, I know I'll be sad when they're gone —if I live that long.😂😂😂 8y
ImaginativeMom ✊🏼Solidarity 8y
CaitlinSiem I do greatly enjoy being kidless lol 8y
LitHousewife @Bookgirl I want off!!! 😂 8y
LitHousewife @MeganAnn I know I had my moments, but I maintain that I don't deserve half of this crap. 😉 8y
LitHousewife @KVanRead If I cry, I swear it will be tears of joy and gratitude for surviving. 😝 8y
LitHousewife @CaitlinSiem As you should! 8y
Peddler410 I work as a middle school librarian in two schools. I've seen it all and when I get home....there are days my seven year old acts like a middle schooler -- the attitude. My only hope is that she gets at least some of it out of her system now! I do have evidence that it can happen! 8y
BooksForEmpathy ❤️❤️❤️😂. 8y
LauraBeth I feel you - I'm in the trenches with you ❤️ 8y
Autumnscribe It's a tough age for everyone (especially moms). Hopefully in a day or two the hormone fairy will have received her cease and desist paperwork and will be wrecking havoc in someone else's home. 8y

I post this about my daughter with all respect. My post about Scarlett, Lisbeth, & RBF reminded me of this picture of her two years ago. She gives me a run for my money, but she's spunky, self-confident, & doesn't take any sh*t from anyone. She's the opposite of accommodating, pleaser, conflict avoidant me. I may sometimes wish she'd hurry & grow up, but I want to be her when I grow up. I need to remember that when she next pisses me off. 😘😘😝

LitHousewife This picture was taken before a parade. She was 11 and looked so grown up. I was proud and wanted a picture. What I actually got is worth a million more times more than what I wanted. 🤗 8y

Beckys_Books Goodness can I relate! 8y
audiothing Beautiful girl you must be proud of her. Is she just "Mum" feisty or the same with everyone? I wouldn't have been MY mother for all the tea in China, but she was my role model so it all turned out good ....... eventually. Hang on in there 8y
LitHousewife @audiothing Good question. She's definitely "Mum" feisty, but she won't let others stand in her way. Adults typically tell me how "sweet and delightful" she is. I'm hoping we'll both eventually rub off on each other a little bit. ? 8y
Peddler410 My daughter is seven and sounds a lot like your daughter! 8y
LitHousewife @Peddler410 Buckle up! It's going to be a wild ride! 8y

|| Grapefruit hibiscus kombucha, coloring, and caring about the "trials and tribulations of our work and relationships, children, homes and sex lives." This is not an angry book but a book to show we women are not alone in our frustrations and joys. Loving this Duluth, Minnesota vacation and the Snooty Fox Tea Shop! ?

AThousandLives87 I loved this book! 8y
WordWaller @Bi-Polar_Reader it's seriously so good! I'm only in the introduction and I'm all like "ME TOO!" every other sentence!! I love love love it when we find a relatable issue and write about it to tell others we are in a similar boat. This is ? so far 8y
JSW Great book. There's a follow up for men called "The Bastard on the Couch." 8y
