The Butler: A Novel | Danielle Steel
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Two different worlds and two very different lives collide in Paris in this captivating novel by Danielle Steel. Joachim von Hartmann was born and raised in Buenos Aires by his loving German mother, inseparable from his identical twin. When Joachim moves to Paris with his mother in his late teens, his twin stays behind and enters a dark world. Meanwhile, Joachim begins training to be a butler, fascinated by the precision and intense demands, and goes on to work in some of the grandest homes in England. His brother never reappears. Olivia White has given ten years of her life to her magazine, which failed, taking all her dreams with it. A bequest from her mother allows her a year in Paris to reinvent herself. She needs help setting up a home in a charming Parisian apartment. It is then that her path and Joachims cross. Joachim takes a job working for Olivia as a lark and enjoys the whimsy of a different life for a few weeks, which turn to months as the unlikely employer and employee learn they enjoy working side by side. At the same time, Joachim discovers the family history he never knew: a criminal grandfather who died in prison, the wealthy father who abandoned him, and the dangerous criminal his twin has become. While Olivia struggles to put her life back together, Joachims comes apart. Stripped of their old roles, they strive to discover the truth about each other and themselves, first as employer and employee, then as friends. Their paths no longer sure, they are a man and woman who reach a place where the past doesnt matter and only what they are living now is true.

Twins Joaquim and Javier are mirror-identical twins, but completely different people! Javier chose a risky drug cartel lifestyle, while Joachim went to college and made a career of being the best butler ever. Not my favorite DS, but good for audiocrafting & laundering …

I am feeling lukewarm about this book. The plot was weak and slow. This is not a deal breaker but when the the book is depending almost totally on the characters I feel they have to be outstanding. While I liked the characters, I was not in love with them and that affected how I felt about the entire book. 3ish ⭐️

SusanLee The more I read her books, the more I feel it‘s the same kind of ‘formula‘ that I‘ve stopped reading her books now. That‘s just my opinion 😅 2y
TheSpineView @SusanLee Yes. It has been years since I read anything by the author. After this book it will probably be a long time before I do again. 2y

Joachim is one of the main characters and the Butler in the story. His mother works for a group that recovers and tries to return art stolen during WWII to the original owners.

Joachim von Hartmann is born and raised in Buenos Aires alongside his twin Javier. The two could not be any more different, yet inseparable. In Joachim's late teens he moves to Paris with his mother and new stepdad. Javier stays behind willingly and disappears from his family's lives to enter a dark world. After dropping out of school, Joachim begins training as a butler and goes to work for the grandest of homes in England. (look at comments)

Madie.Marsh After finishing a job in England, he goes back to live with his mother in Paris.

Olivia White's magazine has gone under after 10 years of hard work. She decides to go to Paris for a year and enjoy what life has to offer. Madie.Marsh The two begin to tackle a series of different tasks and learn that they enjoy working together. At the same time, Joachim learns more about the hidden secrets of his family history. Olivia begins to put her life back together with the help of Joachim and the two begin to form a friendship.

If you like books that involve people moving to a new country to start over again, then you will like this one.

Madie.Marsh A theme in this book is that it takes courage to allow yourself to form attachments, especially when you have been hurt before. Joachim and Olivia must deal with their pasts to create a future worth living.

The Butler by Daniel Steel may be my favorite DS release this year. Unusual with a male main character but a close supporting role of a female main character. Joachim is a finally trained formal Butler who finds himself in between jobs when his long time elderly employees pass away. Taking a break while he reevaluates and weighs his options, he makes a trip to Argentina where he was raised with his identical twin brother(cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy Javier & then to Paris where he spends time with his elderly mother. The mirror image identical twins are a bit like Cain and Abel and brought up the nature vs nurture question for me. Neither Joachim nor his mother have seen Javier in 25 years. On a whim, Olivia takes refuge in Paris After her mother's death and the the folding of her magazine. Unsure of where she is going or what her future holds, she begins to set up her Paris apartment With the help of Joachim who was sent to her through a temp agency. As they each battle to overcome the demons of their past they grow into friendship. But could there be more? As Javier's dangerous criminal life impacts Joachim sedate lifestyle, changes must be made. This book holds a little bit more suspensible intrigue than some of her previous books and I loved Olivia's story And the HGTVesq sideline story. As usual, Steels characters lead charmed lives touched by tragedy, more money than most of us will ever know, & then overcome all to live happily ever after. 3y
