The Pain Gap
The Pain Gap: How Sexism in Healthcare Kills Women | Anushay Hossain
7 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
Explore real womens tales of healthcare trauma and medical misogyny with this meticulously researched, in-depth examination of the womens health crisis in Americaand what we can do about it. When Anushay Hossain became pregnant in the US, she was so relieved. Growing up in Bangladesh in the 1980s, where the concept of womens healthcare hardly existed, she understood how lucky she was to access the best in the world. But she couldnt have been more wrong. Things started to go awry from the minute she stepped in the hospital, and after thirty hours of labor (two of which she spent pushing), Hossains epidural slipped. Her pain was so severe that she ran a fever of 104 degrees, and as she shook and trembled uncontrollably, the doctors finally performed an emergency C-section. Giving birth in the richest country on earth, Hossain never imagined she could die in labor. But she almost did. The experience put her on a journey to explore, understand, and share how womenespecially women of colorare dismissed to death by systemic sexism in American healthcare. Following in the footsteps of feminist manifestos such as The Feminine Mystique and Rage Becomes Her, The Pain Gap is an eye-opening and stirring call to arms that encourages women to flip their hysteria complex on its head and use it to revolutionize womens healthcare. This book tells the story of Hossains experiencesfrom growing up in South Asia surrounded by staggering maternal mortality rates to lobbying for global health legislation on Capitol Hill to nearly becoming a statistic herself. Along the way, she realized that a little fury might be just what the doctor ordered. Meticulously researched and deeply reported, this book explores real womens traumatic experiences with Americas healthcare systemand empowers everyone to use their experiences to bring about the healthcare revolution women need.

Tbqh, few things bother me more than deceit. I went back and read the blurb, and it mentioned pregnancy once. This book is roughly 90% about pregnancy and complications plus maternal care and parenting in a pandemic. I listened to just over half and the upcoming chapters were titled to indicate more of the same. As a childfree person, this book didn‘t interest me at all. Others may like this, but I returned it to audible. #BuyerBeware ⬇️

Megabooks I listened to a whole chapter on invisible illness, and it didn‘t talk about invisible illnesses like the ones I have. It was about the invisible difficulties of parenting in a pandemic. How is that healthcare? So disappointing. (edited) 2y
Bookwormjillk Good to know. Interesting topics but certainly not what I would expect from this book. 2y
Megabooks @Bookwormjillk yeah. It wasn‘t poorly written. Just not a book I would‘ve purchased had I known what it was about. 2y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ugh..that doesn‘t sound like the promising title at all. 2y
fredthemoose Having the text not at all match the description or my expectations based on it is probably the quickest way to get me to turn on a book. 😡 2y
Cinfhen Ugh!!! Very disappointing 2y
squirrelbrain How frustrating 🙄 2y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa not for me it wasn‘t. 😕 2y
Megabooks @fredthemoose truth! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, it didn‘t really apply to me at all. Well written but not accurately blurbed, unfortunately. 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain very much so! 2y

Pickpick

4/5

The Pain Gap illustrates the gap in medical care women in America, and more so women of color in America, face. Hossain does a good job of balancing what individual women can do to advocate for themselves, while also acknowledging that systemic problems like the bias in maternal healthcare can't be fixed just by individuals advocating for themselves, but by systemic change.

Should I have read this while pregnant? Maybe not my wisest choice.

Lol! I forgot I was getting one on audible as well. This #NewReleaseTuesday #audiobook discusses how the US healthcare system fails women, particularly women of color. Y‘all know I like to read things about healthcare!

@Riveted_Reader_Melissa this might be up your alley. I‘ll tag you in my review if you want.

Bookwormjillk This looks great! 2y
Megabooks @Bookwormjillk I have high hopes! 2y
