Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth
Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth: A Novel | Wole Soyinka
5 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
The first Black person ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature gives us a tour de force, his first novel in nearly half a century: a savagely satiric, gleefully irreverent, rollicking fictional meditation on how power and greed can corrupt the soul of a nation (You dont see things the same way when you encounter a voice like that Toni Morrison). In an imaginary Nigeria, a cunning entrepreneur is selling body parts stolen from Dr. Menkas hospital for use in ritualistic practices. Dr. Menka shares the grisly news with his oldest college friend, bon viveur, star engineer, and Yoruba royal, Duyole Pitan-Payne--the life of every party--who is about to assume a prestigious post at the United Nations in New York. It now seems that someone is determined that he not make it there. Neither Dr. Menka nor Duyole knows why, or how close the enemy is, how powerful. Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth is at once a literary hoot, a crafty whodunit, and a scathing indictment of Nigerias political elite. It is a stirring call to arms against the abuse of power from one of that countrys fiercest political activists, who just happens to be a global literary giant. Soyinka is one of the best there is today" --Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Daughter is heading off to college Monday (I have no idea where the time went) so we celebrated by visiting one of our favorite local bookstores. As you do, right? Agreement was one book each and the tagged book was my selection.

1.Tagged book.Urgent, powerful and devastating, worth the long wait for Soyinka's novel. Full review here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4568879289
2.Ma Jian. Please read his excellent works, about totalitarianism and how easily populations get seduced into it.
3.Was absolutely waiting for Jennifer Egan's latest and lucky enough to get an ARC for it! It's as good as Visit from the Goon Squad.

I don‘t even know what happened here. I love his poetry. I was excited for the novel. But it was a mess. 100 pages of unnecessary world building, setting up a series of intrigues. Then, a character dies and everything is dropped, to set up other intrigues that also aren‘t resolved. People are acting suspiciously. We suspect something! But we never find out.

100% set up. 0% payoff. Unless I‘m just not smart enough and missed the point entirely.

Hooked_on_books Nice to see you. Welcome back! 2y
