The Fisherman King
The Fisherman King | Kathrina Mohd Daud
5 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
[Finalist for the 2020 Epigram Books Fiction Prize] Eight years ago, Lisan the fisherman, who has always believed he was descended from royalty, left his wife and the Water Village. Now he’s back, and he says he can prove it. Six hundred years ago, a forbidden relationship between the royal children of Brunei set into motion a chain of events that will end with the death of a king...or the death of a god. As the story of Lisan’s true intentions – and what he was really doing in those years away – unravels, the story of those doomed royal children also spins to its inevitable conclusion.

I‘ll give you all a break from me and make this my last post of the day. 😂 For #July #12booksof2021, the tagged book was my #readingasia2021 pick for #brunei, based on local folklore and I loved it. Short, captivating, and so good. Honorable mention to my 4 1/2 star reads: The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix and Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith.

I finished this a couple of weeks back but didn‘t get round to reviewing it. Two linked stories, based on the myths and legends of #Brunei. There‘s treasure, snakes, love (maybe), betrayal and scuba diving. And as if that wasn‘t enough, we got to spend time in the Water Village, which was pretty much a character all of its own. I liked it. This is the sort of book that I #readaroundtheworld to read.

rockpools And when I do my ACTUAL trip around the world, we‘ll be stopping in Brunei! (A girl can dream!!) @BookwormM @Currey @Simona @TorieStorieS 2y
Currey Absolutely you should stop in Brunei and Sarawak and Bali - a beautiful part of the world 2y
rockpools @Currey Yes please. Have you been? It‘s a part of the world I know nothing about, but would LOVE to spend some time! 2y
Currey @rockpools Yes, but long ago… (edited) 2y

#readaroundtheworld #brunei Two interwoven stories, one 6 generations in the past or 6 generations in the future about Nabau - a terrifying snake god and it‘s relationship with the divine kings of Brunei. The second story takes place in more modern times and seems less about good and evil and more about desire, obsession and belonging. As the two stories become one, the frightening fairy tale quality of the first takes over the second.

Currey @Simona @rockpools @TorieStorieS @sprainedbrain @BookwormM I knew nothing about Brunei and in many ways this story is about how the Islamic faith took over the Hindu gods. Ultimately I didn‘t think the two stories were of equal weight. The main character in the modern tale had very confusing motivations that were not quite worked out. I almost rated it so-so but I did learn about Brunei so I finally rated it a pick. 2y
rockpools Hmmm. 🤔 I‘m kind of looking forward to trying this one. And I know NOTHING about Brunei! 2y
BookwormM This is my choice as well looking forward to it 2y

Weaving a Bruneian legend into a story of a fisherman, the author really managed to hold my attention as she switched between the two. Am thankful for this local-ish publisher that brings these South East Asian voices to the masses.

Based on Bruneian folklore, cobbled together from various sources in much the same way the MC Lisan learns his history and life‘s purpose, this is a fascinating story that I couldn‘t put down. I can‘t say much more without spoilers. I loved this though and am glad it was my pick for #readingasia2021 #brunei💖

BarbaraBB Lucky you to have found this one! 3y
Smarkies I'm reading this too for Brunei! Good to know it is a pick from you. :) 3y
