Smartly & beautifully written historical fiction that is captivating. I couldn‘t wait to get back to the story each time I was so rudely interrupted by life.

Set in late 1700‘s ( and 1800‘s) a story of deep friendship .. Edmund Fitzgerald ( an Irish revolutionary) fought with the redcoats against the American patriots, at the battle of Eutaw Springs he is saved by a black man and former slave … Tony. Fitzgerald brings Tony with him back to Ireland .. they are close companions for the rest of their lives. A powerful story & a challenging read. This novel was written as part of the authors doctorate.

When I recall this memory, I see it as though through one of those great stained-glass windows, that distinguish those magnificent Cathedrals I have visited in Lisbon, Westminster and Hamburg. Her face shifts in colours of blushed pink and sea blue. Her children play in a pool of green light. And when I glance back as I set off on my horse, I see the family wave me off in a glow of sunny yellow. And that glow warms my heart, as each 👇🏻

Cathythoughts 👆🏻… as each recollection betters the last. …. This quote from a former slave in 1788 upon seeing a loved one for a short meeting … he never thought he would see again. . powerful writing in places so far (edited) 3y
