The upcoming marriage of the Earl of Wrexford and Lady Charlotte Sloane promises to be a highlight of the season, if they can first untangleand survivea web of intrigue and murder involving the most brilliant scientific minds in Regency London . . . One advantage of being caught up in a whirl of dress fittings and decisions about flower arrangements and breakfast menus is that Charlotte Sloane has little time for any pre-wedding qualms. Her love for Wrexford isnt in question. But will being a wifeand a Countessmake it difficult for her to maintain her independencenot to mention, her secret identity as famed satirical artist A.J. Quill? Despite those concerns, there are soon even more urgent matters to attend to during Charlotte and Wrexfords first public outing as an engaged couple. At a symposium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, a visiting botanist suffers a fatal collapse. The traces of white powder near his mouth reveal the dark truthhe was murdered. Drawn into the investigation, Charlotte and the Earl learn of the victims involvement in a momentous medical discovery. With fame and immense fortune at stake, theres no shortage of suspects, including some whose ruthlessness is already known. But neither Charlotte nor her husband-to-be can realize how close the danger is about to getor to what lengths this villain is prepared to go . . .

As a free book from Prime reading, this was satisfying. I liked it… but mostly for the characters, not the mystery. I haven‘t read the previous books in the series, but it wasn‘t difficult to follow - and the characters are likable from this book alone, which is great. There‘s nothing I specifically disliked about it, but I wouldn‘t call it wonderful either. It‘s just in the comfortable middle-ground of “good”.

Only got in an hour of listening to my current audio book(tagged) while doing dishes last night. My day was largely spent with family: my sisters from CT, MA NE,( taking photo) & one CT brother, hubby, 2 brothers in law (CT, NE). A day of crazy weather: white fog, sun, hail, wind bursts, sheets of rain. Such a happy day! #novelnovember #readathon

I so like this series of historical mysteries. The mysteries themselves are excellent, but the characters really draw me in. Also, the author weaves in the scientific and technological advances of the time in each of the stories. This one concentrated on botany, so it was right up my alley 😄 Well written, I think even if you hadn‘t read the previous books, you could pick up the backstory and still enjoy it.

kspenmoll I love this series too for similar reasons. Great review- I love the photo!!!! 3y
Butterfinger Are you feeling better? 3y
Lynnsoprano @kspenmoll Thanks! The photo is from Riverbanks Botanical Garden in Columbia, SC. We stopped on our vacation in July. (edited) 3y
Lynnsoprano @Butterfinger You are so sweet for asking 😘 Still waiting for biopsy results, and still experiencing the problem that triggered the test. 3y

Thanks for the tag, @Lcsmcat

1. I‘m about 2/3 through the tagged book. Also doing @MoonWitch94 ‘s real time Discovery of Witches read.
2. The tagged book is from a series, and I am so drawn in by the characters.

Consider yourself tagged!

Crazeedi Hi Lynn!!! Hope you are well! 3y

Thanks to everyone who expressed their concern. I had my medical procedure this morning, it went pretty well. The doctor didn‘t see anything obvious (and he angled the screen so I could see what the camera was showing). Just waiting for the biopsy results, sometime next week. Taking it easy the rest of the day and starting this book. Yet another set in a garden. 💐🌻🥀

Two new books that involve gardens on my Kindle. I‘m really looking forward to the tagged book, which released today, but since the other has Frederick Law Olmsted as a character, I couldn‘t resist.

This is the fifth in a favorite series of mine. As Wrexford and Charlotte are nearing their wedding day, they find themselves reluctantly pulled into the murder of a prominent botanist on the eve that he was planning to present a major discovery/cure. There are several “baddies” and surprising twists in this one. I found this one a little slower to get into, and I missed more of the banter between the leads that was present in previous books. 🔻

robinb However, I had to remind myself that they are an affianced couple now, and a lot of the previous banter came from getting to know one another and flirting. I‘ll be interested to see how their new married dynamic (and mingling of families) will play out in future adventures. 4.25/5⭐️ 3y
mabell I was just thinking of you today, Robin! I always enjoy your reviews 😊 3y
robinb @mabell Awww, you‘re so sweet, Elizabeth! And thank you for your kind words. I‘m not on as often as I used to be (mostly just for reviews), and I feel like I‘m missing out on what‘s new with my friends. 😕 I hope you are doing well, sweet friend! I see that you haven‘t posted in awhile. 🥰 (edited) 3y
