Hairspray and Switchblades | V Castro
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
When Maya and Magdalena lose their parents to a home invasion, Magdalena puts her dreams on hold and turns to exotic dancing. Cash is what the sisters need to stay together and keep Maya in an elite catholic high school that has set her on the path for an athletic and academic college scholarship. These sisters come from a bloodline of Jaguar shifters from Mexico and have gained unwanted attention. The San Antonio Stripper Ripper is stalking the streets, out for a specific kind of blood.Though Magdalena trades in skin, there is no way she will allow anyone to own her. Steamy. Bloody. Dangerous. Hairspray and Switchblades, what more could a girl need to survive the hot streets?

The diversity of each new book in this horror series is amazing. V Castro has combined mythology, horror, and smut in this novella and made it all work very well together.

Who doesn't want to read a book about shape-shifting women who turn into predatory animals and seek revenge on those who wrong them. 😀 Fun read.

Reggie Yeah, lol, she had some parts that made you think being a stripper must be the most uncomfortable thing you could be to, you know what, they could also be the sexiest. Lol also, I liked how she brought both versions of Carlos Santana‘s Maria Maria and Rihanna‘s Wild Thoughts together in a memory timeline. Glad you liked it. 2y
Addison_Reads @Reggie The use of music was great. I always love it when authors incorporate songs into their storylines in unique ways. I'm so glad you posted about this series otherwise I never would have known about it. 2y

I chose this novella to read next in the Rewind or Die series because V Castro wrote one of my favorite short stories last year, The Cucuy of Cancun. Maya is taking care of her little sister, Magdalena, after their parents were killed. She‘s a stripper AND shapeshifts into a jaguar. One night at work she senses a dark malevolent force and wonders if it has to do with the serial killing going on. I loved 3/4ths of this and then it fizzled a 👇🏼

Reggie little. If you were ever that teenager who stayed up late to watch that B scary movie that promised a lot of naked flesh on Cinemax, also known as Skinemax to some in the 90‘s, then this is for you. Lol, it was a lot of fun. 3y
Cathythoughts This is a wild collage ! Love it 3y
Bookzombie @Reggie Love your review! No comment about what I did as teenager. 3y

Reggie @Bookzombie Thanks, Margie! My late time show as a kid was Red Shoe Diaries which was a spin-off show of this same named movie with David Duchovny. Not to sound like that guy that was like, ‘I only read Playboy for the articles‘ but I really loved the music of the Red Shoe Diaries. So much so that in 1995 I sent 12.95 plus 3.95 for shipping and handling off to Canoga Park, CA for their soundtrack, of which like 4$ was change. Lol 3y
Bookzombie @Reggie Lol. I remember that show, but I do not remember the music. ☺️ 3y

It‘s that time again. Also, loving this novella. Shapeshifters, strippers, serial killers, some cool song references, and very visceral writing. What‘s not to love?
