Beneath the Moon
Beneath the Moon: Fairy Tales, Myths, and Divine Stories from Around the World | Yoshi Yoshitani
9 posts | 5 read | 12 to read
Powerful and universal retellings of seventy-eight divine stories, legends, and myths from around the world, each accompanied by a gorgeous illustration from acclaimed artist Yoshi Yoshitani. Many of the lessons we learn are shared stories passed among cultures and generations. In this riveting collection of fables and folktales from cultures across the globe, characters from beloved fairytales, cultural fables, ancient mythologies, and inspirational deities are brought to life, including Sleeping Beauty (Italy), Rapunzel (Germany), Jack and the Beanstalk (England), Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico), Sun God Ra (Egypt), the Crane Wife (Japan), and dozens more. Lesser-known stories introduce characters such as the volcano goddess Pele from Hawaii; Mwindo, the wise and powerful king of the Nyanga people; and the strong and resilient Yennenga, mother of the Mossi people in Burkina Faso. The recurring themes of conquering evil, overcoming adversity, and finding love and companionship are woven throughout this collection. Yoshi Yoshitani's art style is fresh and unique, featuring diverse and multicultural characters. Each story will be featured opposite a correlating illustration, both lush and vibrant.

A beautifully illustrated book, where the text content consists of extremely brief summaries of various fairytales—it‘s designed to feed the eye and not the brain, informative only as a starting point to further reading.

Ridiculously pretty, tho. May be good for a present.

A classic tale you would assume would be in this collection but I had to share because this art is mesmerizing. Would make a lovely art print on the wall…

In the best fairy tale tradition, some of the stories in this collection are dark. The image grabbed me and told me to read this one today. Sad and dark and gorgeous art, it is the whole package.

Love this new feature by @Andrew65 #weekendreading

This weekend I‘m reading Beneath The Moon which is tagged - it‘s beautifully illustrated explaining briefly different fairy tales and myths from different cultures.

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal - high fantasy listening on audio
And about to start reading more Harriet the Invincible books by Ursula Vernon

Thanks for the tag!

What are you reading?

This book was an after Christmas gift to myself - it was SO gorgeous I could not not buy it!
There is a spread for each fairy tale, myth, or other ‘divine‘ story. I LOVE the art and with a quick page per tale, I will be dipping in and out all year to keep connected to the stories - such variety too!
(I will post favorites here 😉)

Pick because the illustrations are absolutely STUNNING! Overall this is a fun collection of myths and fairytales from all around the world but they are extremely simplified. Being simplified is helpful if this is being read by children, but ultimately I thought some of the stories were lackluster and somewhat disappointing. I wanted more details! But now I have a few new myths to look into.
