Ladies of the House
Ladies of the House: A Modern Retelling of Sense and Sensibility | Lauren Edmondson
9 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
AN IRRESISTIBLE NOVEL THAT PUTS A MODERN SPIN ON JANE AUSTENS CLASSIC SENSE AND SENSIBILITY I was absolutely charmed by Ladies of the House. A wonderful debut. Allison Winn Scotch, bestselling author of Cleo McDougal Regrets Nothing No surprise is a good surprise. At least according to thirty-four-year-old Daisy Richardson. So when its revealed in dramatic fashion that her esteemed father had been involved in a public scandal before his untimely death, Daisys life becomes complicatedand fast. For one, the Richardsons must now sell the family home in Georgetown they can no longer afford, and Daisys mother is holding on with an iron grip. Her younger sister, Wallis, is ready to move on to bigger and better things but falls fast and hard for the most inconvenient person possible. And then theres Atlas, Daisys best friend. Shes always wished they could be more, but now hes writing an expos on the one subject shes been desperate to avoid: her father. Daisys plan is to maintain a low profile as she works to keep her family intact amid social exile, public shaming, and quickly dwindling savings. But the spotlight always seems to find the Richardsons, and when another twist in the scandal comes to light, Daisy must confront the consequences of her continued silence and summon the courage to stand up and accept the power of her own voice. A stellar novel that celebrates sisterhood and the way women can step out of flawed mens shadows. I delighted in every page. Amy Meyerson, bestselling author of The Bookshop of Yesterdays and The Imperfects Warm, witty, and whip-smart. Edmondsons talent shines in her expertly crafted story of two sisters breaking free of their fathers legacy. A sensational debut. Amy Mason Doan, author of The Summer List and Lady Sunshine

Hi #pemberlittens & Austen fans 👋

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that Deb in possession of a few bucks & checking her email at lunch, must be in want of deals on Jane Austen adaptations & will buy any well-priced e-books despite her over-stuffed Kindle. 😉😆📚📚📚📚📚

This one is a deal today & it‘s modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility that Publisher‘s Weekly calls “a witty success.” Take my $2 already, Amazon!!!🤷🏻‍♀️

sprainedbrain Ooooh. I had to snap this one up, too! Thanks for sharing/enabling. 😅 3y

DebinHawaii @Chrissyreadit Yes, a while ago & I posted about it when it arrived. I just got home from work—it‘s 6:PM-ish here & I am going to change & open it & will post. I let @Avanders know I couldn‘t open until tonight. 3y
Chrissyreadit @DebinHawaii thanks- I‘m on the road and scatterbrained and learned that packages away from mainland US are delayed for two others so I checked. Sorry! 3y
DebinHawaii @Chrissyreadit No worries! Thanks for checking. 🤗I‘m sure these swaps aren‘t easy to manage-especially while traveling. Sorry to hear about the delays for others. 😕 3y

This was fun! A modern retelling of Jane Austen‘s Sense and Sensibility, here we have Cricket and her two daughters Daisy and Wallis. The story revolves around Daisy. Her father, a US Senator dies and it is discovered that he was different than his projected image. Facing the fall-out, the three women make their way. Normally I do not like Austen retellings, but this was a page turner and I was very engaged. A good, light summer read. 4/5

This was an interesting take on S&S! I loved the characters and the political setting, although Atlas and Daisy sure took their sweet time having an actual conversation about their feelings. #retellings #contemporaryfiction

I have a lot of books on my TBR so I don't know that I can say definitively that this has the prettiest cover of them all, but I'm not NOT saying that either.

I thought this worked pretty well as a S&S retelling! It's nothing amazing, but it's consistently entertaining. And what more can I ask for right now?

Currently reading this modern Sense And Sensibility retelling, and I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it despite it being completely out of my comfort zone.
