Lana's War: A Novel | Anita Abriel
7 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
From the author of the fast-paced, heartbreaking, and hopeful (Kristin Harmel, author of The Room on Rue Amlie) The Light After the War, a riveting and heartfelt story of a young woman recruited to be a spy for the resistance on the French Riviera during World War II. Paris 1943: Lana Antanova is on her way to see her husband with the thrilling news that she is pregnant. But when she arrives at the convent where he teaches music, shes horrified to see Gestapo officers execute him for hiding a Jewish girl in the piano. A few months later, grieving both her husband and her lost pregnancy, Lana is shocked when shes approached to join the resistance on the French Riviera. As the daughter of a Russian countess, Lana has the perfect background to infiltrate the migr community of Russian aristocrats who socialize with German officers, including the man who killed her husband. Lanas cover story makes her the mistress of Guy Pascal, a wealthy Swiss industrialist and fellow resistance member, in whose villa in Cap Ferrat she lives. Together, they gather information on upcoming raids and help members of the Jewish community escape. Consumed by her work, she doesnt expect to become attached to a young Jewish girl or wonder about the secrets held by the man whose house she shares. And as the Nazis deadly efforts intensify, her intention to protect those around her may put them all at risk instead. With Anita Abriels heartfelt and memorable (Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author) storytelling, Lanas War is a sweeping and suspenseful tale of survival and second chances during some of the darkest days of history.

Panpan

I really dont want to pan it but I found the story lacked depth. I found Lana to be rather whiny, childish, not too bright and in no way capable of pulling off what her character was supposed to be doing. The story was choppy and really had no continuity. I had many "oh we are doing/feeling this now?? That makes no sense!!" moments. It just skipped around without transition. It was an easy read but I didnt feel a good one.

A fictional account of The French Resistance during WWII. The audio is very well done.

Next up in audio: “A Mother‘s Promise”

Lana lost everything the night the Gestapo shot her husband because he was hiding a Jewish child in his piano, and she also lost her unborn child because of the shock.

She had to avenge her husband's death, and an opportunity arose - The French Resistance.

LANA'S WAR is very well written, well-researched, flows nicely, and pulls you in with Ms. Abril's writing style and story line. 5/5

Beautiful story! Told from Lana‘s perspective, which I love books that are told from a single perspective. What is the most tragic day in her life ends up propelling her into a life she would have never expected for herself as a resistance spy. Lana is such a wonderful character who reminds me of myself being strong, independent & a little stubborn at times. Highly recommend this for WWII historical fiction lovers!

I liked this one a lot. This author is really good at telling a story.

Lana is pregnant and witnesses her husband being murdered by a Gestapo agent while trying to protect a child. This leads her to working as an undercover agent for the Resistance and helping to get Jews out of France.
