A young, ambitious female astronaut's life is upended by a fiery love affair that threatens the rescue of a lost crew in this brilliantly imagined novel in the tradition of Station Eleven and The Martian. June is a brilliant but difficult girl with a gift for mechanical invention, who leaves home to begin a grueling astronaut training program. Six years later, she has gained a coveted post as an engineer on a space station, but is haunted by the mystery of Inquiry, a revolutionary spacecraft powered by her beloved late uncle's fuel cells. The spacecraft went missing when June was twelve years old, and while the rest of the world has forgotten them, June alone has evidence that makes her believe the crew is still alive. She seeks out James, her uncle's former protge, also brilliant, also difficult, who has been trying to discover why Inquiry's fuel cells failed. James and June forge an intense intellectual bond that becomes an electric attraction. But the love that develops between them as they work to solve the fuel cell's fatal flaw threatens to destroy everything they've worked so hard to create--and any chance of bringing the Inquiry crew home alive. Equal parts gripping narrative of scientific discovery and charged love story, In the Quick is an exploration of the strengths and limits of human ability in the face of hardship and the costs of human ingenuity. At its beating heart are June and James, whose love for each other is eclipsed only by their drive to conquer the challenges of space travel.

#BookReport
Pretty decent reading week for me. Managed to not only finish my impulse reads but also one of my BookSpin backlist I've been working on for months.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to get to at least half way in Half Built and one or two stories from Pump Six.

This is my first Jane Eyre retelling and I really enjoyed it. I think it got the tone of the original despite dealing with a more modern setting and you know space lol.

Ah, Jane Eyre in space... how could I resist?! Unfortunately, it was a bit slow for my taste. It's been described as Jane Eyre meets The Martian. I'd say it's a lot Jane Eyre, and just a dash of The Martian. Definitely more like Jane Eyre in pace and tone. It held my interest, but barely. I just didn't really care about the characters, as there wasn't much to work with there. Preferred Brightly Burning.
⭐️⭐️⭐️

ShyBookOwl @Bookwormjillk It was solidly OKAY imo lol 12mo
Bookwormjillk @ShyBookOwl agree with bonus points for the cover 🤣 12mo
ShyBookOwl @Bookwormjillk LOL fair! It's a gorgeous cover 12mo
Ruthiella Yeah, I read the below tagged by her and it was solidly OK too but I definitely wanted/expected more sci-fi and less domestic drama. 😕 (edited) 12mo

After seeing this described as "Jane Eyre meets The Martian," in a @Bookwormjillk post, I couldn't resist!

20 chapters in. Pretty slow moving, but a lot of Jane Eyre vibes to grasp to, so I'm still intrigued.

Bookwormjillk Interested to see what you think! 12mo

This was a low pick. I loved the premise of Jane Eyre meets The Martian, but the story was a little slow for me.

ShyBookOwl Jane Eyre meets The Martian?! Soooo intrigued 🤔 13mo

Jane Eyre in the setting of The Martian. It works, if oddly.

RaeLovesToRead "What was that weird screeching noise coming from the hydroponics lab?" "Oh that... nothing, Dear!" "It sounded a bit like 'Rochester, you asshole!'" "Seriously, must just be your imagination." ??? 14mo

I found this to be a page turner, but it did lose me a little toward the end. I am curious what others thought of James. Perhaps I‘m missing some symbolism, but I found him to be dark, abusive, and disturbing, but would welcome others‘ thoughts too.

@Eggs & @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
This was one of the most beautifully written sci-fi novels I have ever read. We meet our MC June right after she has lost her uncle. He was a brilliant scientist working for the National Space Program and the only one who understood how brilliant June is at mechanical invention. The melancholy feeling is felt throughout the book. Really lovely writing.

Eggs Sounds and looks amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 3y

🎧 Can‘t win. I read the synopsis - Jane Eyre meets The Martian & that COVER! Sci-fi, MC is smart & female, an affair in space? You got me!

Nope. Disappointment.

SO much potential! Whip smart mechanically inclined 12 year old inventor gets into space school 2 years early & the potential ends there.

On the + side with a tweak or 2 it might make an interesting movie but it‘s a boring book.

Adding a star for brainy June & the cover!

⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻

Twainy Argh DUPLICATE .... sorry. I totally would have bought this if I saw it on the BOTM APP. So pretty. And I really did like the young girl inventor part of this book. 3y
susanw Well put, so much potential and yet the book was boring. Nothing happens and sometimes the things that do, have no reason for happening. I was disappointed because I expected more. Great cover though 3y
Twainy @susanw I really loved the idea of a 12 year old girl genius inventor who ages into space solving problems & saving astronauts that adults had written off. Happy Sunday! 3y

Twainy Geez is it my phone, the internet or Litsy! SLOW! I think I posted this twice! OK I also wanted to mention ... no love affair just an uncomfortable sex scene about 3/4 of the way into the book ... I was glad the book was short. Ignore any duplicate posts 😁 3y

I've been procrastinating on this review because this book has been highly anticipated after I loved this author's first book, If, Then.
.
If I had realized this was intended to be Jane Eyre meets The Martian I may have gone in with more caution. ↘️

ReadingEnvy It's just a taste thing - I overwhelmingly dislike retellings. They often force the author to make the characters do things that don't make sense for them in honor of the larger form, and that might explain some of the choices here. To me there were too many unbelievable things in what felt practically present day (but couldn't be) and a strange lack of intelligence and oversight by those 3y
ReadingEnvy I would expect to have it while the child who shouldn't be that smart seems to have no limits.
.
Such a good cover though.

June is brilliant, growing up at the knee of her genius aeronautical engineer uncle, Peter, who dies when she is 12. She ends up at his eponymous school, groomed for a life in space and trying to learn what happened to a doomed mission. I really enjoyed Day‘s If, Then, and this is equally good. I found both the characters and story compelling and didn‘t want to stop listening.

Heard about this on the Get Booked podcast and had to read right away!
June is the niece of a famous scientist who developed fuel cells to enable extended space travel. The first astronauts using the new technology were assumed lost, but June knows they‘re still out there.

This was not your typical science fiction novel. I would almost describe it as “quiet“. This book has one of my most favorite things, melancholy. It just has this sweet sense of sadness in the writing. It‘s really beautiful and I shed a few tears. While this is a great science fiction story (Gave me major The Martian vibes in parts), it is also just a really lovely written novel. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

And isn't that cover amazing?!?! 🌸

Viji I love melancholy too! Is that weird? 3y
Tera66 @Viji No, it can be such a bittersweet feeling. The first book I ever felt it in is Tuck Everlasting, to this day its my favorite book. 3y
