A really good read!! Strengthened my understanding of gender expression/identity tenfold. Also absolutely love that it's inspired by an Old French poem from the 13th century - my degree focused a lot on Lit like this and it really sparked parts of my brain that haven't lit up in a while

1/3 books finished as part of my #MarvellousMarch readathon goal! @Andrew65

I was... worried, about this one. The original ballad has Silence's true nature revealed at the end, and Silence becomes a perfect, beautiful queen -- and the more I read of this book, the more the original ending jarred against it. So, just to reassure, I think Myers pretty much sticks the landing -- though I found the switch in pronoun to 'they' a bit jarring.

This means two lines in #BookSpinBingo!

A glorious retelling of a 13th c. Poem about a knight who was both a man and a woman. Wonderful and thoughtful take on gender; societal expectations; nature vs nurture; and the wonderful spectrum on which we all live.

I don't know that I've ever read a book that puts so much care and love into the discussion of gender vs sex. The setting and time period added an additional element of "needing" to be a boy for succession. Really adore this book

I was told this is queer King Arthur so I snatched up the pretty Goldsboro edition with sprayed edges and now to read!
