When I was little, the Cucuy was a monster used to scare children into behaving. In V‘s story the same holds true because the Cucuy is this millions of years old, hot chick who murders misbehaving, toxic tourist, spring breakers. The thing about Castro‘s stories are that her monsters feel like they are born out of necessity to balance what is wrong. Still makes for an entertaining read. Also, kudos to her because she has a book that just 👇🏼

Reggie released yesterday in the UK and comes out next week in the U.S. She was asked to write the backstory to a fan favorite from the Aliens movie, Vasquez. I‘m excited for it. 2y
LeahBergen I fully support that murderous version of Cucuy (re: spring breakers). 😆 2y
dylanisreading I love the way V. Castro does social commentary in her horror. So good. 2y
Reggie @Leahbergen @dylanisreading she was on a podcast that discussed this story and she talks about the symbiotic nature of the Cucuy and the people of Cancun because of how they clean the blood off all the walls and she takes care of them. It was really smart. I love all her books but the endings is where she struggles sometimes. 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I haven‘t ready anything by her yet, but I‘m excited for the Vasquez book too. I have this anthology on my Kindle. 2y

Beth is at the Happiest Place on Earth with her husband from hell, Mark. Who always berates her in front of their teenage twin girls, always overrides her decisions, and “playfully” shoves her. The twins, I get that no teenagers are easy, but have you ever met a parent and then their kids and thought there goes future asshole adults. After a particularly rough Princess breakfast, Beth leaves to the restroom where she becomes undone by a 👇🏼

Reggie a princess. With her talons and it is described as ecstasy. Which makes you wonder which part of this story was the horror part. Lol. Anyways there‘s supposed to be a movie based on this book with four of the stories and I‘m stoked for it. 2y
TrishB 😂😂 great review. 2y
MicheleinPhilly The horror part is definitely the trip to Disney World. 2y

Pickpick

What a treat! A few stand outs for me but these are all winners! I‘m from a prairie province in Canada and the last story ‘Good Time in the Badlands‘ really was the perfect ending for me.
I ordered this book by accident but what a happy accident it was. Definitely a pick!

Hestapleton This is everything I‘ve ever wanted in a book lol 3y

I am very much liking this anthology of vacation horror. This comes from the beginning of the short story, The Cucuy of Cancun. I don‘t know if any of you experienced this when you were younger but when I was bad my mom or grandma would say, “You better behave or the Cucuy is gonna get you!” And at night it was worse because if we were at my grandma‘s house we would have to walk back to our house right next door in the dark. And there was a 👇🏼

Reggie space between the houses that was pitch black and you just knew the Cucuy was just waiting for his chance to grab you from there. Lolol good times. 4y
wanderinglynn That image is horrifying! 😱 4y
LeahBergen I‘m traumatized just reading about your childhood. 😆😆 4y

Reggie @LeahBergen it‘s nice to know some kids never got threatened with the boogeyman. Lol 4y
sharread I'm scared. 💯💥😁 4y
Reggie @sharread you should be!!! 😱Lolol 4y
Centique @Reggie I never got threatened with the bogeyman - BUT my grandma left me a three foot tall, hand made doll when she died, so you can imagine how that turned out. Couldn‘t sleep with it in the same house. 😱😱 4y
