The Chiffon Trenches
The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir | Andre Leon Talley
10 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
From the pages of Vogue to the runways of Paris, this deeply revealing memoir by a legendary style icon captures the fashion world from the inside out, in its most glamorous and most cutthroat moments. The Chiffon Trenches honestly and candidly captures fifty sublime years of fashion.Manolo Blahnik During Andr Leon Talleys first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, Andr moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchilds Womens Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as Andr made friends, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. There, he eventually became creative director, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogues masthead, Andr also ascended, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the whos who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how Andr not only survived the brutal style landscape but thriveddespite racism, illicit rumors, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industryto become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. Woven throughout the book are also Andrs own personal struggles that have impacted him over the decades, along with intimate stories of those he has turned to for inspiration (Diana Vreeland, Diane von Frstenberg, Lee Radziwill, to name a few), and of course his Southern roots and ongoing faith, which have guided him since childhood. The result is a highly compelling read that captures the essence of a world few of us will ever have real access to, but one that we all want to know oh so much more about.

This is unlike any memoir I‘ve ever read. Andre Talley is a fashion icon, someone I‘ve always found fascinating and such a force in the fashion world. I loved the historical knowledge on varied topics he shared and all the dishy, honest, fashion tidbits. Getting the inside scoop on all the designers and models during their heyday was a joy. Read by the author and his signature voice made this all the more special. #bookriot #readharderchallenge

Andre Leon Talley died last week. This book had been on my Wish List, and I decided now was the time to buy it. Andre was a legend in the world of fashion. I had the privilege of meeting him at a premiere of the documentary, The September Issue. He was interviewed after the film about the Industry. #bookmail

I thought there was going to be tea about Wintour but turns out there was tea about Lagerfeld. This book manages to be both vapid and moving simultaneously. It reveals the cruelty of the fashion world. But also gives insight to the real pain in Talley‘s life.

It felt appropriate to make a red velvet face mask while I started a fashion memoir. #audiosewing

xicanti @Traci1 I‘ve only worn it for a few minutes so far, but it didn‘t seem too warm for indoor use. It‘s just cotton velvet; nothing too fancy. 3y

It was good, but not amazing. I studied clothing and textiles ( and English and history) at university. I was all about Vogue and Women‘s Wear Daily WWD! I loved clothes back then and I still love them now, I was a bigger risk taker back then though. My girlfriend told me today she saw Karl Lagerfeld 3 times on one trip to Paris 🤯

Fantastic for gossip, but strangely almost simplistic in writing style. Lacking the music and whimsy of his magazine writing but you forgive it because of all the insider information!

This is fascinating but in some ways discombobulating. The detail and the anecdotes and yet the staccato sentences and repetitive vocabulary.
