Stan Parker, with only a horse and a dog for company journeys to a remote patch of land he has inherited in the Australian hills. Once the land is cleared and a rudimentary house built, he brings his wife Amy to the wilderness. Together they face lives of joy and sorrow as they struggle against the environment.

This is where I finished reading this #australianclassic today 😍. Patrick White requires your full attention and I‘m glad I was able to give it. Profound, lyrical, epic, it traverses life from birth to death of Stan Parker.
This is my second White and I was interested to see (from my Litsy review) that I finished my first, Eye of the Storm, on holiday in this very location 2 years ago 🤔. Hard work but worth the effort. 🙏🏻❤️ #ozfiction

Jeg Well done. I‘ve never read one of his.( I don‘t think 🤔) 3y

🤣😂 Upwardly mobile Thelma is newly married to her solicitor boss. It‘s the 1950s so she is now a lady of leisure. She and her new husband are visiting her parents in the countryside. Her mother Amy asks her whether she reads…

Lizpixie Oh I relate so much! My mother had pretty much the same dismissive attitude towards reading. It was a “waste of time”. Thank god my dad was and auntie were readers and encouraged me behind her back! 3y
MrsMalaprop @Lizpixie glad you had other reading ‘influencers‘ in your life. 🥰 I‘m sure, like me, you can‘t imagine a life without reading. I also related to Thelma‘s idea that she‘ll never get through all the books she wants to read 😩. 3y
Lizpixie Oh I know. I think the word tsundoku was made for us littens! 3y
Lizpixie My auntie was my hero as a kid, we had no money for books so she funnelled a steady supply of 2ndhand books to me. One of the reasons I love Dame Agatha so much is she gave me old copies when I was 10. 3y

And this is why I will persist with this challenging, dense tome. Because I read a section like this and sigh. So evocative, beautiful, satisfying. I find Patrick White‘s writing exquisite. ❤️❤️❤️ #currentlyreading #ozfiction #australianclassic

CarolynM I've never read any of White's novels. You're making me think I should try. 3y

Making a start on this 1955 #australianclassic recommended by author Christos Tsiolkas, who has written a book on White‘s work. I have read one other Patrick White, The Eye of the Storm, which I absolutely adored.
The first page introduces us to the main character, his dog and his horse, so this photo of the book with my dog Rusty (the blur of fur in the background) seems appropriate. Wish me luck with this tome. #ozfiction🤞🍀

CarolynM Good luck! I've never read any of White's novels, but I've seen a couple of his plays and I've read 3y

Because he had nothing to hide, he did perhaps appear to have forfeited a little of his strength. But that is the irony of honesty.

Of course my mum was right - I did spend money. I got these two books by Aussie author Patrick White, who I've wanted to read for a while but not got around to. And can we all agree how delightful it is getting books in brown paper bags?
