Take It as a Compliment
Take It as a Compliment | Maria Stoian
16 posts | 11 read | 35 to read
"I was fifteen." "I never saw him again." "They chanted after me, 'Oscar the Grouch, Oscar the Grouch." Bringing together the voices of males and females of all ages, the stories in this collective graphic memoir reflect real life experiences of sexual abuse, violence and harassment. Each experience is brought to life by Maria Stoian's exceptional artwork. Her unique and varied styles powerfully reflect the tone and mood of the different stories and in just a few pages express the complex emotions felt by victims of sexual abuse. Covering acts such as sexual violence, public sexual harassment, domestic abuse and child abuse, this is a reminder for survivors that they are not alone and a call for all of us to take action. The stories clearly show that assault of any type is not an honour bestowed on anyone. It is not a compliment.

*trigger warning for sexual assault and harassment both drawn and written about in this book so please take care of yourselves!

this graphic novel is a collection of stories all about the real lived experiences of people dealing with sexual assault, it isn't very long but it does tell you a whole lot about r*pe culture and how it silences and shames those who have done nothing wrong and allows those who have done wrong to do as they please. 5/5.

Congratulations on your milestone @DGRachel 🎉🎉

I love to recommend the above books and books like them, because they draw attention to a very important subject: sexism and sexual assaults. Granted, it isn‘t the most fun og happy subject, but it is a subject I think a lot of people could benefit from learning more about.

A powerful and necessary read. These stories of sexual violence, abuse, and harmful relationships can help others.

I don't know if this can be considered as a #lesserknowncomic still, since I try to rave about it every chance I get. 🤷‍♀️ #sorrynotsorry

In little stories or vignettes we are told different experiences with sexism, sexual assault and rape. It breaks my heart every time I read it, but it is a powerful and necessary book.

HippieChickHomeschool Would this be appropriate for teens? 7y
Kalalalatja @HippieChickHomeschool That's tough to answer, because it really depends on the teen. There are not really explicit depictions of the sexual assault, but it is very clear what it is going on. I don't know if this is helpful? 7y
HippieChickHomeschool That is very helpful, thanks! 7y

Victim blaming, sexual assault and rape culture are some of the subjects/themes that #drivemecrazy - crazy in the this-make-me-so-angry-I-want-to-scream-way. These three books deal with the themes in different ways, and I would recommend all of them (which I've done before, but I can never rave about these enough)

On a different note, I am so happy to be doing the photo challenges again. I hadn't realised how much I missed them!

These books all tell a hard #truth about sexual assualt and it doesn't matter that some of the books are fictional. These books have all made me so angry, sad and intent on doing something!

I-read-and-eat Great picks. I really do find myself being more and more engaged the more I read about certain issues. 7y
MyNamesParadise I'm listening to Missoula in my car right now and it's emotionally draining. 😞 but I can't imagine the ordeal any of these women have gone through, so the least I can do is listen to their stories. I will be glad when I'm onto a different audiobook though. 😔 7y

I can't give stars on this one- it's not a book that should be rated.
This is a short graphic, but NOT a novel- it describes real life accounts of sexual abuse- the abuse came from people of similar age to the victims. And it made me angry, but also made me realize that I need to listen and pay attention. A necessary read for anyone who has hit adolescence.

One of the #politicalfiction books that comes to mind is this graphic novel. The art is powerful, and the stories even more so. Sexual violence and harassment are never okay.

(Edit: These stories are real. So not fiction. Sorry!)

This might seem like an odd choice for an #inspiring book. But the stories in this graphic novel about everyday and not so everyday sexism and sexual abuse really did something to me and my attitudes about sexism. So much in fact that I am planning on writing my Master thesis on the subject of victim blaming.
This book is a both great and scary, and I would recommend it to everyone.

I am beginning to love #shortstories and these are a few of my favourite collections. I especially love "Take it as a compliment" which tells different stories of sexism and assualt through pictures. I would highly recommend it! #booktober

TW: Sexual violence survivors' stories. The artwork is fantastic. Each story has a different style and panel layout. However, the color palette is fairly consistent (lots of purple and dark blue) which seems to connect everything. Only critique is the lack of explicitly queer and trans content.
