Panpan

While I enjoyed the author‘s auto-fiction SweetBitter, her real life account shared in this memoir could not hold my attention. Her writing is lovely but her personal story & the way she chose to share it left me cold and unmoved. I skipped large chunks hoping to settle into a grove but I never got there. It‘s a pan for me.

TrishB ☹️ and you finished! 2y
Cinfhen I think it might be end of the month burnout @TrishB I‘m feeling restless with my current reads😬 2y

Had high hopes for this memoir but so far it‘s just not holding my attention. It might be #MemoirBurnOut

BittersweetBooks I sadly felt the same way about this one 😕 2y
Cinfhen Oh, I‘m glad to hear I‘m not alone @BittersweetBooks she‘s not very “likeable” either 😬 2y

I‘ve loved some very sad people in my life and hurt myself trying to get them to change. They didn‘t, and I have no business being surprised by it. People will tell you who they are. It takes an emergency for some of us to listen👂🏻🖤

There are dozens of memoirs out there that follow the same theme. Growing up with horrible, highly dysfunctional parents, resulting with the now grown, damaged, adult child who makes a mess of her own life. I don‘t mean to be glib about it but it is a far too common scenario. The difference in this book is the author is a good writer which made all the difference. She took a misery memoir and turned it into a pretty interesting story. 👍

TheLudicReader I liked Sweetbitter, so I am going to stack this one. 3y

Danler is a phenomenal writer, whether it is fiction or non-fiction, I fell like she is giving us 100% of her.

This is a soul-searching memoir about destructive choices and abusive parents.

Both Stephanie‘s parents are addicts. They‘ve both made horrible decisions about her care while she was in it. This book centers around the time around the release of Sweetbitter when she had moved back to LA near her mom.

In addition, she is in a destructive affair with “the monster” while trying to start loving herself enough to leave.

I couldn‘t put it down. 4.5⭐️

Megabooks @Cinfhen you‘re going to want to read this #audiobook!! 4y

Megabooks @Cinfhen you have it!! 👍🏻👍🏻😘 4y
Crazeedi @Megabooks I'm tired! Trying to get some garden in, cleaning up outside, since its finally warmer, so I havent been on here for couple days, it just exhausts me and I crash! 4y
Megabooks @Crazeedi yes! I understand. I have been sleeping at the strangest hours, too! 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I think you‘d enjoy this too! 4y
britt_brooke Thanks! 🤗 I‘m curious, but leery. I didn‘t like her novel. Maybe I‘ll grab this from the library and see. I am a sucker for memoir. 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I bailed on her novel. Hated it. Which is why I got this from the library. She‘s a much better memoirist than novelist. Although I didn‘t start loving this until part 2 (of 3 or 4) when she introduced her dad. 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Interesting! It‘s a good lesson in giving an author a second chance. I just placed a hold on it. 😉 4y

I got it on release day...from the library!!! It‘s been awhile since that happened. And I have Rodham coming from Parnassus that shipped yesterday. 💃🏻💃🏻 It‘s a good week for reading. 😁

Prairiegirl_reading I ordered Rodham today too. I debated for a while but I‘m just too curious! 4y
Megabooks @Prairiegirl_reading I‘m so excited!! 4y

This is a writer's memoir. The writing is gorgeous and the emotions are raw. Told in non-chrinological and mostly thematic vignettes, I loved parts of it but found the whole to not be greater than its parts. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #ATY2020 (major theme of survival) @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB You‘re ahead of time haha, I‘m running 🏃‍♀️ behind you, just started my Maximilian Hell book! Well done! 4y
nomadreader @BarbaraBB I lucked out with one I wasn't planning to read for Maximilian counting for it! But also trying to get the prompts read early for the month so I can read whatever strikes my fancy (never more important than in a pandemic to read what I'm in the mood for!) 4y
BarbaraBB That‘s true, I also feel I‘m allowed to read according to my mood swings these days! 4y
