Dombey & Son
Dombey & Son | Charles Dickens
Mr. Dombey's idealistic vision of his "Dombey and Son" shipping firm rests on the shoulders of his delicate son Paul. However, when the firm faces ruin, and Dombey's second marriage ends in disaster, it is his devoted daughter Florence, unloved and neglected, who comes to his aid. This new edition contains Dickens's prefaces, his working plans, and all the original illustrations. The text is that of the definitive Clarendon edition, which is supplemented by a wide-ranging Introduction that highlights Dickens's sensitivity to the problems of his day, including those of family relationships, giving the novel added depth and relevance. The Notes and Bibliography have been substantially revised, extended, and updated. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Just started the book in preparation for leading a group discussion on Goodreads. After spending this year in the library instead of the English classroom, it‘s exciting to have some literary analysis in my life! I‘m already fan-girling over nerdy things like anaphora and personification! 😁#BookNerdandProudofit

Good morning, Littens!

I have found an oasis of calm this morning to try to power through the behemoth that is Dombey and Son.

I hope you all have a great day! ❤️📚❤️

Each September I read a Dickens novel, and this year‘s selection is Dombey and Son. I was surprised to realise that I only have one more novel left to read after this, so it‘ll be Martin Chuzzlewit next year!

I love how this coffee shop honours those clever goats and that even cleverer Ethiopian goatherd, Kaldi, who discovered coffee.

Thank you, Goats! ❤️🐐❤️☕️❤️

My last of Dickens‘ completed novels and a real high note! Paul Dombey Sr. is crippled by his overweening pride and is jealous of the affection his son and heir shows for his sister. Tragic yes but also classic Dickens with its bright spots of humor and fantastic supporting characters! ❤️ #ClassicsChallenge2020

thebluestocking You are a Dickens machine!! 💙 4y
Ruthiella @thebluestocking I ❤️ Dickens. 4y
Centique That‘s so good to know. I am slowly getting round to finishing Dickens at one book a year! Will get to this one eventually 😍 4y
See All 9 Comments
Ruthiella @Centique I‘ve read him slowly too over the past 15 years. Now I get to reread ( or maybe read Edwin Droodge after all? I am wary of reading an unfinished novel...🤔) 4y
Centique @Ruthiella I‘ll be interested to hear what you think! That one will be years away for me 😂 Good to know it is an achievable goal though 👍 4y
Centique @Ruthiella what‘s your favourite? I think mine so far is Bleak House although I find myself remembering scenes from Great Expectations far more frequently. 4y
Ruthiella @Centique hard to say! Martin Chuzzlewit will always have a special place because it was the first. Bleak House, Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby, and Little Dorrit are also favorites for me! 😀 4y
Reviewsbylola Of Dickens, I‘ve read A Tale of Two Cities, which I HATED, and A Christmas Carol, which was more enjoyable. What else should I try?! 4y
Ruthiella @Reviewsbylola I didn‘t like A Tale of Two Cities as much as I have others from Dickens. I would suggest you try Great Expectations next and if that‘s not your cup of tea, enjoy one of the many TV adaptations! They are wonderful (and less of a time investment!). 4y

Another ongoing Librivox listen that I‘ve been doing in bits and pieces for months. Currently in a stretch where I‘m listening a lot (and I‘m sure will add several more hours during the upcoming end of year readathon!) Mil Nicholson is a Librivox treasure—pro-level Reading and she is working her way through all of Dickens! I‘ve been doing Dickens in chronological order for the last couple of years, and this is the halfway book! #librivox

And on to the next #Dickens

This is going to be a re-read of a book I studied at university. I think I enjoyed it originally.

A huge #mtbr 🏔️ at the moment, particularly as I have a full allocation of 10 library books going.

I'm slogging may way through to find out if this awful father will ever except the golden-hearted daughter. I still love dank, dark Dickens the night time observer but lordy be he takes his time serializing in a slower age.

This one took some Googley detective work, but it appears #TheGameChicken is a pugilistic sort of character in the novel Dombey and Son. Another one that‘s still TBR for me but I am intrigued by the great character name, definitely worthy of #Spankle #DickensianDecember @jenniferw88 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

I found a new copy of "Dombey And Son". My original copy got ruined when the roof in an old apartment leaked. Now the book is warped and the pages are stuck together. But I am keeping it for sentimental reasons. The other books were found on a sale table for .50 each. So you know the Penguin 60's came home with me. And the other Dickens book was a big score. Also another big score was the Bradbury book.

#junebookbugs #classicsTBR Just a few I own and am yet to read. The two in the middle which are hard to make out are Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens, and Shirley by Charlotte Bronte.

Interesting read, but I understand why it's not read more often. The plot is bit baggy and round about even compared to other Dickens novels. I thought Paul Dombey (the son) was one of the more interesting version of the angelic dying child.

Making some progress with this and enjoying it. The son is an odd little character.
