The House Opposite
The House Opposite | Connie Willis, BARBARA. NOBLE
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
It was curious that the aerial bombardment of London, which had ennobled so much that was normally sordid, should only debase a love affair between two people who had managed for three years to overcome the threat to their relations implicit in all such. To die together would be simple. It would not be so simple to be dug out still alive from the same collapsed building. Elizabeth Simpson is a secretary having an affair with her married boss. Her father is an air raid warden and her terrified mother takes her courage from concealed bottles of rum. Owen Cathcart, their neurotic teenage neighbour, slips out during night raids to watch the fireworks and collect souvenirs of shrapnel. And Bob Craven, a soldier Elizabeth uses as cover for her illicit romance, plans his taxi rides to see the most dramatic bomb damage. In this riveting drama of life during the Blitz, the extraordinary immediacy and vivid, intimate detail stem directly from the first-hand experiences of Barbara Noble, who lived and worked in London throughout the war. The result is a unique social document and an unforgettable reading experience. 'The most satisfying picture yet of what life was like in London during those hectic months.' Times of India

March and April were poor months for me, by in May I read this 5 ⭐️ gem. Written during the Second World War, this conjured up incredible images of daily life during the Blitz. The writing is so evocative. This one was very nearly my favourite book of the year.

Pickpick

Oh my, this book ❤️ Set against the backdrop of the Blitz, this book is not about war but about people and relationships. Noble‘s writing is superb, vividly bringing to life the images of London during the Blitz, while also creating real characters with emotions, concerns, feelings. Highly recommended.

Hello #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub -
Your Sept group reading decision is the choice between 2 houses: The House Opposite by Barbara Noble which is a novel of life during the Blitz with various interesting-sounding folk and A House in the Country by Ruth Adam about post-war life of a group who decide to adjust to peace time together in a country manor house they find available to rent.
I will link to the Ruth Adam book description in the comments!

elkeOriginal I think @LeahBergen and I agree it was confusing to find we own both the Ruth Adam House in the Country as well as a Persephone by the same title but different author. I know I personally was just confused when I found they were different books! 🤦🏼‍♀️ (edited) 2y
Ruthiella My vote is for A House in the Country. 😃 2y

rubyslippersreads I vote for A House in the Country. 2y
LeahBergen Ooo, good choices! And I think I will opt to read one of my two identically titled books 😆 and vote for 2y
CarolynM They both sound good, I think I'll order both straight away. I'm going to vote for 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM The House Opposite is one of the few I don‘t own. I‘ll be ordering it, too. 🤣 2y
quietjenn I have read A House in the Country, so vote for 2y
batsy Oooh! I had a hard time deciding but since I'm forever in the mood for rural retreats in fiction, I'll vote for 2y
erzascarletbookgasm eeny, meeny, miny, moe 2y
rubyslippersreads For anyone who gets Hoopla through their library, both of these books, as well as many other FM titles, are available to borrow. 😊 2y
Kimzey One of my Goodreads friends really loved The House Opposite, so that‘s my choice. 2y
Jess_Read_This I‘m in! Can you remind me closer to September?? You know I‘ll need it! 🥴 2y
LeahBergen All have voted now and it looks like A House in the Country has won! I‘ve been making lists (yes, I‘m THAT person 😆) so I‘ll post our updated choosing rotation. I think we had mentioned that this month was the end of our rotation; we now have two new members, so I‘ll add them to our list! Is that okay with everyone? @erzascarletbookgasm @rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella @batsy @catebutler 2y
Kimzey @LeahBergen Thanks! 2y
CarolynM @LeahBergen Absolutely ok with me 🙂 Thanks Leah😘 2y
Ruthiella Great! Two new members! 🥳🥳🥳 2y
quietjenn Sounds good - thanks! 2y
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen May list makers rule the earth! 🙌🏻 2y
elkeOriginal @erzascarletbookgasm @quietjenn @CarolynM @LeahBergen @Kimzey @Cathythoughts The voting was close so let me know if you want to buddyread House Opposite or just throw it back into a poll down the road! I personally could not choose and want to read both 🤦🏼‍♀️ 2y
Kimzey @elkeOriginal I‘m fine with letting it go back into the pool to be offered up again later. I did add it to my Litsy stack, so there‘s a chance I might read it before it‘s an official choice. But, I have a rather large and unrealistic TBR list, so I never know what will actually rise to the top. 2y
elkeOriginal @Kimzey I agree about the TBR! 2y
batsy @elkeOriginal I'm fine with it going back into the poll later, too! I would love to read every one of these FM books and it'll be fun to do this in a group as long as we're able to 😊 2y
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal I‘m assuming that a bunch of our “almost wons” will go back into our pool and get picked again, especially if people offer up what they already own. I‘ll need to read them ALL, obviously. 🤣 2y
CarolynM I'm for sending it back to the pool. I'm sure someone will propose it again soon🙂 2y
erzascarletbookgasm Yup, back into the pool. For now I need to purchase our July and September books 👌 2y
quietjenn Yes, back to the pool and wouldn't be at all surprised to see it again 😏 2y
