5 ⭐ This historically banned book is a look at World War 2 and the Nazi concentration camps as seen through the eyes of a child. This book is form 1985 and does not have a happy ending. While this book is older, it reminds me of the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. A little girl, Rose Balance, sees kids in cages with stars on their chest and just wants to help them get food. This book is sad, but this book is true. This book SHOULD NOT BE BANNED.

I read this because I was outraged to learn that it occasionally made it on banned book lists, not because of anything to do with its holocaust content, but because it‘s aimed at older readers and people think picture books aren‘t appropriate for them.

I‘m super glad I did read it though, because it‘s a powerful piece of historical fiction, and I 💯 trust that both the words and the art will speak to MG and YA readers!

LibrarianRyan Never heard of it, but i have officially stacked it. And i agree. There are still people who think Go the F**k to Sleep is a children's book. 2y

#HollyJollyReading Day 14: One of the reasons why I was moved deeply by this book is the way that Rose Blanche‘s voice seems achingly real and innocent and joyful. Her unsullied, red-ribboned-carefree nature is such that you wish you can just create a safe world filled with kind-hearted people and well-intentioned beings just for her. #BowRibbon but quite sad. Hard hitting picture book. Promotes lots of discussion and writing with my class.

A sad children's take on WWII. My Children's Lit professor read this to us in class one day and I was astonished at the darkness of it. It's told from the perspective of a child who has no idea what's going on in her home town in Germany. Great illustrations. Depressing story.

Rose Blanche is a picture book for children about a brave little girl named Rose Blanche who sees hungry, starving children and helps them. Important, heartbreaking, gorgeous. With an introduction written by Ian McEwan. #reccomendsday
