The new standalone from the 'Queen of psychological suspense' - with a disturbingly impossible situation. '[One] of the great unmissables of the genre - intelligent, classy and with a wonderfully gothic imagination' The Times ********* All Beth has to do is drive her son to his Under-14s away match, watch him play, and bring him home. Just because she knows her ex-best friend lives near the football ground, that doesn't mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. Why would Beth do that, and risk dredging up painful memories? She hasn't seen Flora for twelve years. She doesn't want to see her today, or ever again. But she can't resist. She parks outside the open gates of Newnham House, watches from across the road as Flora and her children Thomas and Emily step out of the car. Except... There's something terribly wrong. Flora looks the same, only older. As Beth would have expected. It's the children. There's something wrong with the children. Twelve years ago, Thomas and Emily were five and three years old. Today, they look precisely as they did then. They are still five and three. They are Thomas and Emily without a doubt - Hilary hears Flora call them by their names - but they haven't changed at all. They are no taller, no older... Why haven't they grown?

Why are Lewis and Flora's kids seemingly frozen at the age they were when estranged friend Beth last saw them 12 years previously? And why is Flora now calling herself Jeanette? Sophie Hannah has a real talent for taking the most bizarre, implausible, scenarios imaginable and somehow turning them into page turners. I thought this one was easily the best of hers I've read so far.

I have only read one of her previous books , one based on an Agatha Christie theme and I didn‘t like it.
This book got me hooked and I couldn‘t stop reading. Was worried the end might disappoint, it didn‘t.
So might try another of her books. Any recommendations?

I make no apologies for really enjoying Sophie Hannah books. This isn't one of her best, but it kept me entertained on a lazy Saturday.

Started out with so much promise, the middle was a bit boring and had some of unnecessary filler but the ending made up for it. Not at all how I thought it would go. It was ok.

This is the first book by Sophie Hannah that is not a Poirot book. This is a thriller, Beth is on her way to droo her son off at a football match. She decides to pass by the house of her ex-best friend. Not really thinking she would be there, but lo and behold Flora is there with two small kids Thomas and Emily. But that can't be them as they should be 12 years old right? Beth becomes obsessed with finding out this msytery. I very much enjoyed it!

One day Beth sees her old friend Flora, they paths haven't crossed in about twelve years when their friendship abruptly came to an end.
But something shocks Beth, Flora's children, Thomas and Emily would have been very young so as this much time has passed they should now be teenagers.
But they haven't aged one day after all these years!
Beth is tortured by the question posed, "Why haven't they grown?"
So starts a quest for the truth...

Really enjoyed this! Familiar trope of a woman who knows there's 'something not quite right' and keeps pursuing the issue. Cleverly executed and kept me guessing. Sophie Hannah at her best. Lots of reading time since I returned from Italy. #revenge #selfisolation #librarylove

I loved the this thrill packed book, and I found it fairly impossible to unravel the truth before the end. If you like bold, determined protagonists who will absolutely not take no for an answer, then look no further than Haven‘t They Grown. Full of twists and turns, you won‘t be able to stop thinking about it until you know what‘s really going on.

Beth hasn't seen her friend Flora for years but she knows that she had two young children called Thomas and Emily.
One day Beth sees Flora AND two children of similar age to Thomas and Emily when she saw them last.
Beth is stunned and confused and is determined to get to the bottom of it and why while Flora has aged her children haven't.
With her family thinking she is crazy Beth can't let it go and delves deeper and deeper into the mystery.

So...I went out for lunch and was trying to be healthy so had a salad, but was still hungry afterwards. My toddler fell asleep on the way home so I made a little pit stop and now I‘m parked in my drive eating chicken selects and listening to the tagged book on audio. I should mention that I‘m seven months pregnant so a second lunch is acceptable.....right Littens?? 🤰🐷

DGRachel If you consider the first lunch “second breakfast” you can blame Tolkien. 😆 And yes, second lunch is completely acceptable when first lunch leaves you hungry. No one likes hangry. 😆 4y

This was an interesting story with am intriguing premise. Theres a lot going on to sift through to finally get the answers but it does eventually come together. The plot is interesting and has some good twists to throw the reader into one theory before twisting it to another. The ending was cleverly done but I feel the final conclusion was a little rushed. I liked Beth despite her being a little reckless and crazy. #Netgalley 4*

LiteraryinLawrence I have preordered this and am eager to read it! It will have a different title in the US. 4y

Thought I‘d picked up something from the Sci-Fi shelf - that could be the only logical explanation, surely, but this is a mystery, a thriller, not Sci -Fi! What else would you think though, if you saw your ex-best friend and her two children who looked exactly the same as they did 12 yrs ago? Well, the MC isn‘t going to let it lie, and decides to find out what‘s happened. I flipping LOVED this book! And I did NOT guess the ending!

LiteraryinLawrence I just read this (published under a different name in the US) and really liked it! 4y

Beth while out doing an errand one day sees an old friend called Flora.
She hasn't seen her in twelve years as they ended the friendship at that time with no contact since.
Before they stopped speaking Beth knows that Flora had two children called Thomas and Emily who were very young and whom should be around the age of teenagers by now but when Beth sees her she is accompanied by two young children of around the EXACT age of years ago.
