The Rise of Wolf 8
The Rise of Wolf 8: Witnessing the Triumph of Yellowstone's Underdog | Rick McIntyre
8 posts | 3 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
The astonishing true story of one of the first wolves to roam Yellowstone in more than 60 years. Book One in The Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone: A Trilogy [Rick McIntyre] is first and foremost a storyteller whose encyclopedic knowledge of Yellowstone's wolf reintroduction project is unparalleled." --Nate Blakeslee, author of American Wolf Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves--but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995. This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves. Wolf 8 struggles at first--he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied--but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his prote?ge?? Authored by a renowned wolf researcher and gifted storyteller, The Rise of Wolf 8 marks the beginning of an original and bold new trilogy, which will transform our view of wolves forever.

I'm escaping into this book tonight because I need to know that humans can do good things too. Reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone has been huge for the entire Yellowstone ecosystem.

It's amazing how our kids can put us back in touch with our childhood passions. I have always loved learning about animals and I was especially enthralled with wolves as a kid. I credit our son for allowing me to rediscover the joy of animals through his love for all living things. As he gets older, I hope he never loses touch with what truly brings him joy. I cannot wait to dive into this book!

Going in, I wondered how well this book would read coming from a scientist whose characters names are all numbers. Turns out it reads quite well, fantastic even. I started to worry towards the end that we wouldn't get closure of the main protagonist's story, but the ending is remarkable. 40 years of studying wolves, I think the author help put to rest a lot arguments regarding canines and personalities.

CaitZ I also loved this book. His second book is just as good 3y
CampbellTaraL @CaitZ oooo, I'm looking that one up now. And the story really does unfold like a saga, can't wait to continue it. 3y

Since I was a child I've had a keen interest in wolves (so much so that my parents still get me a wolf calendar every year). This book is on my TBR and it looks like there could be a lot to learn about the wolves of Yellowstone within the pages.

This is one of the best books I've read all year. I've always loved wolves and learned so much about them. The author has studied wolves for 40 years and is able to pass on his knowledge in a manner that is interesting and easy to understand. It covers the first 5 years after the wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995. He's planning two more books. (11 points) #ImpulseRead #24B42020 #WinterGames #ReadNosedReindeer
