Strange Candy | Laurell K. Hamilton
11 posts | 39 read | 13 to read
#1 New York Timesbestselling author's Laurell K. Hamilton's first short story collection-including an all new Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter story. Known for her darkly violent, stunningly erotic Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels, New York Timesbestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton reveals new dimensions of her talent in these fantastical fairy tales and lush parables as she welcomes readers to the far corners of her fertile imagination. From a woman who marries into a family of volatile wizards to a couple fleeing a gang of love-hungry cupids, from a girl who seeks sanctuary in the form of a graceful goose to the disgruntled superhero Captain Housework, readers will revel in the many twists and turns of fortune in these unique, sometimes surreal visions. Hardened vampire hunter and zombie animator Anita Blake gets blindsided by the disturbing motives of her clients in the never-before-published "Those Who Seek Forgiveness" and in "The Girl Who Was Infatuated with Death."

I‘m behind on my #ChillingPhotoChallenge again, so I‘ll try to space them out today & play catch-up a bit!

Oct 16th: Candy
Status: I own this in hardcover & I read it. It‘s a very strange little book full of short stories. I originally picked it up at a library sale for an Anita Blake short story. And although I‘ve soured on Anita a bit as the years have passed, I haven‘t on my favorite candy indulgence Dark Twix.

This short story collection is some of my favorite work by Laurell K. Hamilton. With a wide variety of genres and characters, Hamilton proves that she‘s got some serious chops! I hope that someday she‘ll explore some of these worlds and stories more fully! Maybe even start a new series?

vkois88 It sounds really good! 6y
Linear I loved the cupid story the best 6y
Linear Now that I think of it... I cant remember if that story was in this book or the "ever after" one.. 6y

It's always great to be surprised, and this collection of short stories was surprisingly good, a nice mix of fantasy, goth and science fiction. The only dud was the final story, an Anita Blake vampire tale. I just don't care for the pale, pretty boy, Lord Byronic vampire she has in her story. Vampires should be, IMHO, monsters, viscous beasts who rip your throat out for blood. I'd take the vampires of Salem's Lot over this kind any day.

Due to my aversion to vampire fiction (and zombies too for that matter), I have never read anything by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Well, this was the last story in this collection and I love that Hamilton both started and ended the collection with bad ass Anita. These stories were all really good and so easy to get lost in. @ValkyrieAndHerBooks mentioned that some of these should be novels and I definitely agree.

With the completion of this book I have read 63 short stories for #keepingitshort and the timing is perfect. I've got a lot of King short stories to read. 😉

MeganAnn This is one of my favorite short story collections. I go back to it again and again and I loved Anita at this stage! ❤️ 7y

"Irving has a good heart, but his sense of humor was a little sadistic."

Guys, this short story about a vegetarian, 30 ft long, lake monster is freaking hilarious! Irving is the lake monster and he is chasing tourist around the lake because he likes people. And everyone is terrified!

Now for something completely different. When I was browsing through different short story collections hoping to find some authors I liked, I was delighted to find this collection by Laurell K. Hamilton. I read quite a few of her Anita Blake novels before the stories just became too much. I do though like her style, so this is extremely convenient.

the.bookish.valkyrie I love this collection! It makes me wish she would pick up the thread of one of these for a new series! I think her best work is in these stories! 7y
Leniverse I'd say that the stories became too little rather than too much. Like 10% actual story and 90% sex and being angsty about sex. 😆 I liked the early books though. 7y
TheNextBook @ValkyrieAndHerBooks I really like her writing and the first story was that Anita story and it was so good!!! Anita is everything. So bad ass! 7y
TheNextBook @Leniverse spot on!!! I made it to the tenth book and couldn't handle it anymore. 7y
Leniverse I think I read 11 before I gave up. And two or three of the Merry Gentry books, which I thought started out great (no sexual angst! No irrational hatred of tall blondes!) and then those just lost the plot too. 😂 7y

Two of my favorite #shortstories books. I pull these out all the time and pick a story or two to read when I need something in between books. Strange Candy is a group of stories with all the great things you usually get with a Laurell K Hamilton book but in bite size pieces. I may be due for a re-read on this soon. It's perfect for #scaretober reading 👻 #somethingforsept
