How the Dead Speak | Val McDermid
9 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
'The queen of crime is still at the top of her game' Independent 'No one can tell a story like she can' Daily Express 'One of today's most accomplished crime writers' Literary Review 'We are all creatures of habit. Even murderers . . .' When human remains are discovered in the grounds of an old convent, it quickly becomes clear that someone has been using the site as their personal burial ground. But with the convent abandoned long ago and the remains dating back many years, could this be the work of more than one obsessive killer? It's an investigation that throws up more questions as the evidence mounts, and after their last case ended catastrophically, Tony Hill and Carol Jordan can only watch from afar. As they deal with the consequences of previous actions, someone with a terrifying routine is biding their time - and both Tony and Carol find themselves closer to the edge than they have ever been before . . . Electrifying and filled with masterful suspense, this is the most eagerly anticipated thriller yet from number one bestseller and queen of crime Val McDermid.

I feel like I should of read the previous books in this series to become more invested in the characters. Otherwise great storytelling, gripping and plenty of drama to keep me interested.

I promised some more sinister nuns + this the 11th tony hill/carol Jordan outing the nuns certainly play a very straight bat in the face of what has been appalling child care. These characters are like old socks, very comfortable once you start reading and the last few bks have i felt been a bit hit and miss as they get truly buffeted. This was better but i felt still needed another 100+ pages to explain the real villain. Still i hope not the end.

Cathythoughts Like old socks .... ❤️😁 (edited) 4y
Cathythoughts Appalling child care .... desperately sad , the saddest of all 💔 4y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts yes it was horrible but crime novels do take the worst stories and use them. I'll try and avoid nun novels for a while. 4y

Val's not called the Queen of Crime for nothing.
At the end of the previous book I could not see a way forward for this series. Not in the original sense of how it use to be. But I had great faith in Val after that last sentence. And she did not disappoint!

This book was different from the previous ones in the series, but still just as good.

Last read for 2019. I haven‘t read one of her books for a very long time. This did not disappoint. A quick, engaging read. A perfect holiday read and end to the year.

Given the way events have affected things, this is a bit of a different book to others in the series, but despite that it was a very enjoyable book. This series is always changing perspectives and writing books in different ways, following life events for the characters, but this keeps the books fresh and enjoyable. I love this series and hope we will see more.

#SummersEndReadathon 2762 Pages, 7 Books Read.

Cathythoughts Just got the first 3 in a kindle package 📦. Really looking forward to them. Definitely a big hit on Litsy 👍🏻♥️ 5y

Andrew65 @andrew61 I always try to ensure I don‘t give anything away, as would spoil this book and previous books for other people. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. 5y

Time to pick up the brand new book in the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan Series. Given the devastating events at the end of the last book I‘m not sure how Val takes this series forward. Should be fascinating! I LOVE this series, if you haven‘t read it ...why???? ❤️❤️❤️
