The Wife and the Widow
The Wife and the Widow | Christian White
The second standalone thriller from the award-winning author of THE NOWHERE CHILD Set against the backdrop of an eerie island town in the dead of winter, The Wife and The Widow is an unsettling thriller told from two perspectives: Kate, a widow whose grief is compounded by what she learns about her dead husbands secret life; and Abby, an island local whose world is turned upside when shes forced to confront the evidence of her husbands guilt. But nothing on this island is quite as it seems, and only when these women come together can they discover the whole story about the men in their lives. Brilliant and beguiling, The Wife and The Widow takes you to a cliff edge and asks the question: how well do we really know the people we love?

Full disclosure…I didn‘t fully get what was going on (believe me I tried, I even tracked back and relistened to some parts, more than once) until I finished this and went on Goodreads and read a question that someone asked on there; once I read the answer…yeah…my mind was blown.🤯 But honestly I shouldn‘t have had to learn what was up that way.🤔 I don‘t know…but I will say it was one wild a$$ ride.

Really enjoyed this one from an Australian writer Christian White, kept me guessing with a few twists where nothing stays a secret forever. The wife fights to protect her family and will do anything for them and the widow who wants answers which puts her in mortal danger. The truth will come out when their worlds collide.

11-12 Feb 2021 (audiobook)
Free audible book of the month - which is why I listened. Crime fiction is not really my thing: I find it predictable and get annoyed that it always seems to involve some kind of ‘deviant‘ sexual practice. Does being gay actually make a person more likely to commit murder? Perhaps this is more excusable when you realise that aspect of the story took place 40 years ago...
Nevertheless, it was easy to listen to.

CarolynM I didn't like this much either. Very ordinary writing and I agree with you about the attitude towards homosexuality. The big twist has given it more accolades than it deserves, in my opinion. (edited) 3y

This is a captivating story set in dual perspectives as the title predicts. There is a startling twist at the end which completely threw me and made so much make sense of the many questions I had formed. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this author.

A+ one day summer read. This is a compelling thriller, that had some clever twists/reveals. The biggest strength of this novel, as with much Australian fiction, is in the exceptional sense of place. White captures the isolated, windswept nature of the island and uses this to build tension throughout. This was just what I needed.

Freespirit I agree a great read👍🏼❤️ 3y

When I started this story, I thought I'd hate it and thought the first 25% in I'd DMF it, but I stuck with it and wow, what a wild ride! The juggling of the timeline was a wild ride, the wife tells her story from the past and the widow tells her story from the present day.

This was a superb story, one I'll recommend to folks who want a good thriller, there were lots of twists and turns.

Wow what an amazing story... If I am correct, this story happens from two different time periods... I need someone else who has read this to confirm that for me.. the Wifes story happens like 20 to 30 years before the Widow's story begins... Wild.

A good thriller with a clever twist. Kate investigates the disappearance of her husband in an island town, while local woman Abby confronts her husband‘s secrets. It‘s engaging and tightly written, the characters feel real and he evokes the windswept feel of the island and its small-town atmosphere. I wasn‘t quite sure about the portrayal of gay characters & would be interested in what others think. But compelling overall.

CarolynM I agree with you about the gay characters. The tone was a bit off. I wasn't keen on the book anyway. 4y
Abailliekaras @CarolynM I‘m glad I wasn‘t the only one. 😉 4y

I read a lot of mystery / thrillers - and can usually spot the culprit before the great reveal. With #thewifeandthewidow however, I was completely thrown - flabbergasted 😲 which books have your favourite twists?

JennyM Did NOT see it coming!!! 😲😲😲 Hope you and the family are well, Tash x 4y
Tashreads @JennyM we are thank you. It‘s nice now that things are slowly getting back to normal - and the kids are at school 🙌🙌 how have you been during these crazy times? 4y
JennyM @Tashreads I‘m glad all is good. We are also slowly getting back to some type of normal. Having the kids back in school has made a huge difference. Xx (edited) 4y

I wasn‘t sure how to rate this. It was a very quick read . But I can‘t say I found it a satisfying read. I‘m about to read his first book that won awards. This was his second. Wonder what other people thought. @MrsMalaprop

BEST book I‘ve read in a good year, I loved “the nowhere child” and this book had just got Christian White a place in my favorite authors. If you like Jane Harper you will like this 👌🏽

Freespirit Didn‘t do it for you? 😂😂😂 4y
JennyM Lol...the twist didn‘t grab you? 4y
CarolynM @Freespirit @JennyM The twist was highlight. It was an ok story and kept me reading but the writing was dull and the characters underdeveloped. Also the root cause of it all felt a bit off. 4y

Rissreads Did you read his first book The nowhere child? I wasn‘t a fan so because of that I don‘t think I would bother with this. 4y
JennyM @Rissreads no I‘ve not. I was going to look for it though after enjoying this one. It‘s not great literary fiction but, without giving away spoilers, what he does is super clever. After a lot of reflexive books of late, I also think a compulsive, quick read was what I needed. And this was definitely that! 4y
Bette 👍review! It didn't follow one of the dances that all the new psychological thrillers do and it was such a surprise. I really liked it too. 😊👍 4y

JennyM @CarolynM I‘ll be curious to hear what you and the book group make of it. It‘s not a great piece of fiction but there is definitely some thing you‘ll want to discuss! You‘ll speed through it as well - super quick read. 😊 4y

Oh I‘m having a hard time writing about this one without spoiling it. Instead I‘ll say 1) first fiction book that has kept my attention for months. 2) read it in one sitting. It‘s seriously gripping and the perfect holiday read if you‘re at all into mysteries. @Victoria_Clyne read it so we can talk about it.

CarolynM This one is on my Christmas list. It sounds great! 4y
