A mind-bending novel in which an alternate history of 9/11 and its aftermath uncovers startling truths about America and the Middle East 11/9/2001: Christian fundamentalists hijack four jetliners. They fly two into the Tigris & Euphrates World Trade Towers in Baghdad, and a third into the Arab Defense Ministry in Riyadh. The fourth plane, believed to be bound for Mecca, is brought down by its passengers. The United Arab States declares a War on Terror. Arabian and Persian troops invade the Eastern Seaboard and establish a Green Zone in Washington, D.C. . . . Summer, 2009: Arab Homeland Security agent Mustafa al Baghdadi interrogates a captured suicide bomber. The prisoner claims that the world they are living in is a miragein the real world, America is a superpower, and the Arab states are just a collection of "backward third-world countries." A search of the bomber's apartment turns up a copy of The New York Times, dated September 12, 2001, that appears to support his claim. Other captured terrorists have been telling the same story. The president wants answers, but Mustafa soon discovers he's not the only interested party. The gangster Saddam Hussein is conducting his own investigation. And the head of the Senate Intelligence Committeea war hero named Osama bin Ladenwill stop at nothing to hide the truth. As Mustafa and his colleagues venture deeper into the unsettling world of terrorism, politics, and espionage, they are confronted with questions without any rational answers, and the terrifying possibility that their world is not what it seems. Acclaimed novelist Matt Ruff has created a shadow world that is eerily recognizable but, at the same time, almost unimaginable. Gripping, subversive, and unexpectedly moving, The Mirage probes our deepest convictions and most arresting fears.

Pickpick

This book crosses into territory so ridiculous it was fun. While a serious book I was laughing out loud. But that is because both sides are just so ridiculous even in real life. Some truth: I got bored in the middle and put it down for 3 months. A war movie got me thinking about it again and suddenly it wasn't boring anymore.

Needs a certain mind-frame which is fair. A good time for this one with the Middle East political climate.

#BookReport
Another week of sticking to my scheduled books. I'm amazed since I'm such a mood reader!
-Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne: The Nov selection for #NYRBBookClub One of my favorite selections so far & today's discussion was very insightful. The group has a lot to say about this one. 5⭐
-Mirage: I haven't reviewed this one yet. I'm still thinking about it. Good concept, a bit muddled. 3.5⭐
-Endless Night: All Hail the Queen! 5⭐
@Cinfhen

Cinfhen I‘m going to try to join your NYRB group / assuming I can get titles 🥰please add me to your list (edited) 4y
vivastory @Cinfhen I can tag you & let you know what titles the group has voted on. Right now nominating & voting on titles is done by the group at the beginning of the month, but then the discussion & read along is open to anyone on Litsy. Once all of the group members have co-hosted then I'm going to reopen it. 4y
BarbaraBB So glad you‘re joining us @Cinfhen ! Most books are available in other editions as well. In december the group will discuss this one, which I already read and LOVED 4y

#WeeklyForecast
Up first is Moore's "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne" for #NYRBBookclub discussion on Sat.
I loved Ruff's "Lovecraft Country," so I'm looking forward to "Mirage."
Finally I have lined up a Christie, as mentioned last week I have been craving one of her books & Horowitz's "Magpie Murders" is making it stronger.
@Cinfhen

FlowerFairy Greatly enjoyed Magpie Murders 4y
Suet624 I‘m looking forward to hearing what you think about Moore‘s book. 4y
Cinfhen Your NYRB seems to be getting mixed feelings...which means it‘s going to be a great discussion 4y

batsy That's a Christie I don't remember reading before and I read somewhere that it's kind of got a psychological thriller feel—that sounds intriguing! 4y
veritysalter You‘ve picked a really good Christie. I loved Magpie Murders too - happy reading 📚 4y
vivastory @FlowerFairy I ended up really enjoying it! 4y
vivastory @Suet624 I hope to finish tonight or tomorrow 4y
vivastory @Cinfhen I think so. Our monthly discussions are great, but I always find it interesting when members don't always agree. Tend to make for lively discussions! 4y
vivastory @batsy Have you read all of Christie's works? What are your personal favorites? 4y
vivastory @veritysalter I'm glad to hear that! And, yes, MM was great. Have you read any other Horowitz? 4y
batsy @vivastory Not all I don't think, but because I grew up with her books around it feels like I've read quite a few! Apart from the crowd faves like Roger Ackroyd, And Then There Were None, & Orient Express, I also really like ABC Murders, Crooked House, Sad Cypress, The Moving Finger, Death on the Nile, Sleeping Murder, & The Third Girl, to name a few 😆 These are all atmospheric & quite creepy or melancholy, even if the mysteries aren't perfect. 4y
veritysalter @vivastory Yes, ‘The Word is Murder‘ and ‘The Sentence is Death‘; also his two Sherlock Holmes stories ‘House of Silk‘ and ‘Moriarty‘. I like his books very much. He‘s a screenwriter on a lot of TV programmes here like Midsommer Murders (a guilty pleasure) and Foyles War. 4y

Current read - what if 9/11 took place on 11/9? And what if the the whole situation was reversed? That is the premise behind Matt Ruff‘s book on a mirror reality to ours. I always enjoy Ruff‘s stuff so this should be good!

Mehso-so

I have loved Matt Ruff since my wife introduced me to his first book, Fool On The Hill. He never writes the same book twice. The Mirage was a pretty big miss for me. It's Ruff's great style, but there's something missing. Robert Ferrigno did something similar (and better) with his Assassins trilogy.

Kleonard Could not agree with you more. 8y

As much as I love Matt Ruff's work, this novel didn't so much for me. The gimmick of the plot was interesting, but I never found myself invested in the characters or their outcome. What say others who've read it?

Pickpick

The Mirage imagines a world where the Middle East is the super power and America is a collection of squabbling nation states led by religious fanatics, then uses that setup to explore the War on Terror. Definitely a nice change from the "What if the Nazis won WWII" alternate history cliché. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
