Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare Vol. 1
Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare Vol. 1 | Yuhki Kamatani
9 posts | 16 read | 5 to read
Not only is high schooler Tasuku Kaname the new kid in town, he is also terrified that he has been outed as gay. Just as hes contemplating doing the unthinkable, Tasuku meets a mysterious woman who leads him to a group of people dealing with problems not so different from his own. In this realistic, heartfelt depiction of LGBT+ characters from different backgrounds finding their place in the world, a search for inner peace proves to be the most universal experience of all.

Kenyazero Great!! These look like awesome reads. I‘ll have to check quite a few of them out. Love that you worked in a few graphic novels and Klune books. 2y
Nutmegnc @Kenyazero I‘m still working on the 2021 list and I‘m keeping a separate list of those lgbtq books that didn‘t fit either one. It‘s been really fun!! Thanks so much for putting it together!! (edited) 2y
Kenyazero @Nutmegnc I look forward to seeing your 2021 reads too! And I‘d be interested in seeing what books didn‘t make it onto either bingo. It could give me some ideas for 2023 😉 2y
Nutmegnc I‘m thinking I should add the star ratings, too?! 2y

The representation of LGBTQ+ citizens in this series is beautiful and much needed. All the characters represent a significant moment for a member LGBTQ+ whether is coming out or homophobic peers. The artwork is also stunning. My only complaint would be that the plot is quite fast-paced.

Pre-#readathon library haul! Some of the books I wanted were on the shelf at my local branch, so I had to go inside instead of just grabbing my holds. And of course, there were people browsing (and touching everything) verrry slowly at the exact shelves I needed and expected to spend about ten seconds at, tops.

Not that I‘m grumpy. Okay, I‘m a little grumpy. On the way in, they TELL you to be quick and only touch what you need. Blah.

Texreader I feel your frustration 😬 3y
xicanti @Texreader it‘s like, I get that the library was closed for a really long time and people missed browsing, but I needed two things, and I knew exactly where they were, and you can‘t just slip in beside people anymore. Ugh. 3y

For those looking for LGBTQ+ friendly manga, Our Dreams at Dusk is a must read. It follows high schooler Tasuku Kaname as he struggles with coming out. He meets a mysterious woman named Someone-san who leads him to a Drop In Center for people dealing with similar problems to Tasuku's. This manga depicts realistic LGBTQ+ characters in modern day Japan. Pick up a copy at your local library today.

Set in contemporary Onomichi (near Hiroshima), this #manga is about a group of young queers at various stages of coming out. They volunteer together on house renovations. Yuhki Tasogare, the creator of this series, is agender—their identity is no doubt what gives this volume such an authentic emotional feel. I look forward to subsequent volumes. #lgbtq #graphicnovel Excellent #translation by Jocelyne Allen.

More book synchronicity with Gumballs: the very next #graphicnovel that I picked up (tagged) has a gumball machine in the opening pages.

I adore all of these volumes of manga. The one that packed an emotional punch was by far Our Dreams at Dusk. This is a beautiful coming out story written by a non binary mangaka. Please go support this beautiful story.
