The Union Jack
The Union Jack: The Story of the British Flag | Nick Groom
3 posts
Known the world over as a symbol of the United Kingdom, the Union Jack is an intricate construction based on the crosses of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick. Nick Groom traces its long and fascinating past, from the development of the Royal Standard and seventeenth-century clashes over the precise balance of the English and Scottish elements of the first Union Jack to the modern controversies over the flag as a symbol of empire and its exploitation by ultra-rightwing political groups. The Union Jack is the first history of the icon used by everyone from the royalty to the military, pop stars and celebrities.

3 years after James VI of Scotland inherited the English & Irish thrones in 1603, becoming James I of England, a royal decree created a new flag for maritime purposes, combining the Cross of St George and the Saltire of St Andrew, though the Acts of Union were not passed until 1706/7. The Saltire of St Patrick was added following the Acts of Union with Ireland in 1801, creating a #UnitedKingdom.

TheEllieMo Of course, the predominantly Catholic Irish Free State left the Union in 1921, giving what we have today as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But that‘s another story altogether! 5y

Possibly controversial today, but this is what always comes to mind first when someone says #RedWhiteAndBlue to me.
