A Green and Ancient Light
A Green and Ancient Light | Frederic S. Durbin
15 posts | 11 read | 24 to read
A gorgeous fantasy in the spirit of Pans Labyrinth and John Connollys The Book of Lost Things. Set in a world similar to our own, during a war that parallels World War II, A Green and Ancient Light is the stunning story of a boy who is sent to stay with his grandmother for the summer in a serene fishing village. Their tranquility is shattered by the crash of a bullet-riddled enemy plane, the arrival of grandmothers friend Mr. Girandolea man who knows the true story of Cinderellas slipperand the discovery of a riddle in the sacred grove of ruins behind grandmothers house. In a sumptuous idyllic setting and overshadowed by the threat of war, four unlikely allies learn the values of courage and sacrifice.

This has to be the biggest "surprise" 5-star review I've ever given ?

In just shy of 300 pages, the author created a beautiful, quiet, but magical story full of nostalgia. The writing was light but had enough substance to build a convincing world, which is a "must" in my fantasy books. I had distinct flashbacks of my 8-year old self looking for fairies in the forest...my heart is so happy and full ?

Love starting my Saturdays on the deck with a book and a bagel, before everyone else wakes up. The forecast is calling for temps in the low 70s, so hoping I can spend most of my day outside ?

I recently started this "magical woods" fantasy, and so far it's everything I could hope for on this gorgeous late spring day ?

janeycanuck What a fantastic way to start your day! 2y

A lost 400-year-old garden, filled with statues, set in a thick and verdant forest, that harbors clues to an ancient and mysterious puzzle? Yes, please!! Endearing characters, a bit of magic, and the perils of a wartime setting? Even better!

Thanks, @Readergrrl , for this fabulous pick for #LMPBC Round 14 #GroupO.

BookBosomed1 Oooooo. The tagged book sounds great. I‘m trying to finish a Murmur of Bees this week. It‘s a hefty book and so interesting! I hope to send it to @Readergrrl next week. (edited) 2y

I really enjoyed this book! Even when the storyline was a little slow, my interest was still peaked just through the author's writing style because it was so eloquently written! What an enchanting and wonderful story!

This is definitely a slow read but I felt pulled into the story. I can see why some might be so-so on this one because it takes awhile to build. There's a little mystery and an fantasy element that doesn't show up right away. This is a great rainy day-type of read, and a rainy day would only enhance the setting of the book.

Mehso-so

I'm wavering between pick and so-so on this one. I rated it so-so because the middle was really slow. Set in an unnamed country during an unnamed war (appears to be U.K. during WWII), a young boy is sent away to his grandmother's for the summer. Behind the house is a grove of statues and a strange tower rumored to hold a secret. A downed enemy pilot rescued by the pair helps to solve the riddle, along with a faun from grandma's past.

Yesterday was busy, so I didn't get very far in this one yet. This afternoon is a little slower, so there's time to read while drinking a latte and eating a salted caramel biscotti, which is super yummy btw. #bookandcoffee #currentlyreading #BooksfromSteinbeck

Up next. I like working from home because the time I used to spend commuting can now be spent on the couch with a book and cup of tea. So much better! #currentlyreading

JanuarieTimewalker13 So, so much better!! Enjoy!! That cover and title is amazing! 7y
Redwritinghood @JanuarieTimewalker13 I've never read any by this author, but the title and cover hooked me. 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Redwritinghood go for it!! I stacked it based on those alone!! Can't wait for review. Put a natural setting and a deer on the cover and yeah, it's a shoe-in. We crave nature. I just looked up "shoe-in" and it's about corrupt jockeys. Hmmm, I'm learning too much before coffee. My head may explode. 7y
Zelma Yes, any woods scene on a cover is a draw for me, even more of there is snow! 7y
