Great Indian Novel
Great Indian Novel | Shashi Tharoor
In this award-winning novel, Tharoor has masterfully recast the two-thousand-year-old epic, The Mahabharata, with fictional but highly recognizable events and characters from twentieth-century Indian politics. Nothing is sacred in this deliciously irreverent, witty, and deeply intelligent retelling of modern Indian history and the ancient Indian epic The Mahabharata. Alternately outrageous and instructive, hilarious and moving, it is a dazzling tapestry of prose and verse that satirically, but also poignantly, chronicles the struggle for Indian freedom and independence.

Congratulations on the Litsyversary, @BarbaraBB and thank you for hosting the #ThinkLocalGiveAway. I realized that I haven‘t reading anything set in Oregon which I need to rectify. However, I usually recommend the tagged fictional book set in India. It is one of my favorites as it focuses on the political history from the time that India gained independence in 1947 but the characters reimagined from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.

BarbaraBB Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention and entering the giveaway! ❤️ 4y

Pickpick

#Reading1001 #ReadAroundtheWorld #India #BloomingLitsy this book made me realise how little I know about the history of India.

I managed to spot the most obvious parallels the people and the events but I am sure I missed more than I spotted.

I enjoyed the witty writing and wordplay as well as the references to other literary works.

I find this way of retelling history more accessible than dry facts and it inspires readers has.

Mehso-so

I did liked the book at first, there was a thriller type feel to it. But as it go on it transformed to a boring opinionated Indian history book with name of characters changed. The initial consistency of characters get lost in the later pages of the book. Any way Mr. Tharoor is somewhat successful in taking Mahabharata, the great Indian epic into the Times of Indian indipendence struggle.

Was curious why a used copy of a trade paperback would go for $15; then I learned that it wasn't commercially available in America, but was instead published in english in India and then imported. Thanks to the ATL Vintage staffer who sold it to me at a further discount even after we learned this fact. Seriously, cannot recommend that store highly enough!

I just came to know that a event started at midnight 7 July, Indian Literature Readathon by the time I am starting this book people have finished reading at least 2 books but I am joining in because my goal is to read and enjoy this readathon. So here is my first pick - The Great Indian Novel by Shashi Tharoor. He might be in jail right now but he writes really good books. I am a fan of his writing. #IndianLitReadathon #IndianLiteratureReadathon
