World's End | T. C. Boyle
32 posts | 12 read | 4 to read
Walter Van Brunt is a dreamer, and a lover of drugs, alcohol and speed. He likes nothing better than to fly along on his motorbike, invincible and immortal. But one day, dodging a mysterious shadow on the road, he crashes into a barrier and loses his right foot. Walter is a descendant of Dutch yeomen and since the day of the accident he has been haunted by their ghosts. When he receives a new plastic foot he is determined to find his father who deserted his family years ago, and to uncover the secrets of his ancestors.

Pickpick

Wow. That was a whirlwind ride of a book. I really enjoyed the back and forth narration between the past and present. The way that the past manifested itself in the present and vice versa was slightly eerie. The sins of the fathers, as it were. History repeating itself, ad infinitum. This generational tale is still swirling around in my brain. I have not read anything quite like this book. #WorldsEndBuddyRead

So I really enjoyed this, though I did like the 17th century storylines more than the 20th century ones. But is that a huge typo or intentional on the second-to-last page? I'm confused!! #1001books

I rarely laugh while reading--even books that are supposed to be funny rarely strike me as funny. This paragraph, though, made me actually laugh out loud, for real. Fried okra and brown rice.

DreesReads I could do without the okra, but the rest sounds good (especially if there's turmeric). Not very romantic, though 😉 6y

#worldsendbuddyread What I would try to amend is the unchristian attitude toward Jeremy Mohunk by so called Christians who forget that they are to be kind to the fatherless.

BookwormM World‘s End reads quicker than I expected it to 6y
Kristelh I agree with Book, but Humbold‘s Gift does not read fast. 6y

#worldsendbuddyread. my book cover might suggest a frame story as we have the history and the present story. So far I am not drawn to any particular character but I kind of like Walter. I like the history part best. Least favorite character is Oloffe Stephanie Van Wart but not fond of the dirt eater!

Kristelh Also I think we have history repeats itself 6y

Perfect weather for #litsypartyofone. Reading World‘s End because I finished my #LOTRChapteraDay since it was 2 pages long. Probably have a tasty beverage to go with my party.

Liz_M Snow! And I was hoping it would be a mild winter. 6y
Kristelh @Liz_M yes, way too early and it snowed again last night 6y
