This did a great job of showing the ways Van Gogh and Gauguin were able to inspire, influence, learn from, teach, and compete with each other during the 9 weeks they lived together, and how it changed and informed each of their work during that period and also going forward. This interplay between artists is something I‘ve always been fascinated by, so I loved reading about this! BUT I found the writing style challenging. 👇🏼

IndoorDame It seemed at times to be narrative nonfiction, and at times to be academic writing without clear transitions between them. This made it hard for me to follow some of the more biographical sections, especially the last few chapters where he traces Vincent‘s spiral into cycles of mania and depression. I think I‘d grab another book if I wanted to read more in depth about his self mutilation and his illness. #bookspin 2mo

I‘m about to start my #bookspin book. I chose it from a “this spine is calling to me” category, but when I opened it I was surprised by my favorite endpapers of all time! I wonder if I should have a “fun endpapers” category 🤔 @TheAromaofBooks

I got “this spine is calling to me” again! this time for my #bookspin slot, and I decided on The Yellow House. My #doublepin was something from my #auldlangspine list. I just started The Vaster Wilds yesterday morning, but I‘m already drawn in. @TheAromaofBooks

#MayMontage #YellowColor Everyone has a few niche genres, and books about artists lives, especially small circles of artists interacting and fueling each other‘s creativity are my jam! (Can you tell I went to art school?😂) Definitely need to read this! @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

#GratefulHarvest

The Yellow House is where Van Gogh painted his bedroom and the series of paintings of sunnflowers. Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin shared the #yellow house for six weeks and it's where he also painted portraits of the chairs they each used. I‘m interested to read about their friendship, the tensions, and the events that led to Van Gogh slicing off his own ears, and what happened thereafter.

Eggs Fascinating, and nice collage👏🏻📚🪑 2y

DivineDiana I don‘t know if the fabulous, immersive Van Gogh exhibition is coming to your area, but if it does, you must see it! There is a reproduction of this room along with so much more. It is an incredible experience! (edited) 2y

Gayford writes a gripping micro-history of one of art‘s most infamous events: Vincent Van Gogh cuts his right ear off with a razor. Told with page-turning intensity and lots of black and white images this is a perfect summer read for people who enjoy biographies, true crime, art and southern France.
