Senior year at all-girls Catholic school St. Joans Academy has just begun, and Colleen Rowley and her friends are feeling the heat. Applications to Harvard, the battle for valedictorian, the high expectations of their parents, meeting boys in Cambridge . . . all of it has turned school into a pressure cooker. When beautiful, popular Clara Rutherford starts having loud and uncontrollable tics while her horrified classmates look on, chaos sets in as more and more girls begin reporting bizarre symptoms: losing hair, body vibration, seizuresAnd then one of Colleens best friends, Anjali, starts coughing up pins. The media quickly descends on the small town of Danvers, MA, as school officials, angry parents and the board of health scramble to figure out whats going on before it gets worse. Theories range from a latent Strep virus to environmental pollution, all to no avail. But as Colleen soon realizes, theres one thing nobody has factored inDanvers, MA was once called Salem Village, the site of a similarly bizarre epidemic among teenage girls over 300 years earlier...

Book 23🎧

Hmm… this one was just a bit lacking for me, and dragged on a bit - I felt like it could have been skimmed down.

When they were reviewing all of the girls “symptoms”, it was catching my interest but it just kind of fizzled out 🙁 Was of course hoping for more “spook” 🤷🏼‍♀️

However, due to this books repeated mention of “The Crucible”, I will be watching it next!

Pool side reading on this 104 degree day. It is unusually cool for July. I love these sunscreen sticks, no more slick hands after rubbing in sunscreen on the kids. Plus a giant sweet tea.

A story alternating between modern day and the time of the Salem witch trails. The reader swaps from hearing from a key witness in the trials confessing to her pastor, and from a modern day teenager who attends a catholic girls school experiencing an odd epidemic. I found the audio book very intriguing, but the end left me wanting. Still a fun, Halloween read.

I wanted this to be similar to My Best Friend's Exorcism so much. I ended up disappointing myself. The premise is promising, but I had a hard time connecting to any of the characters from the get-go. Also, the time-skips every other chapter wouldn't have bothered me, except the language used for the 1600s was out of place and too modernized. I guess I prefer historical accuracy.

annkuch13 I had a hard time with this one, too. But I loved one of her other books 7y

I'm digging this audiobook so far! Perfect October read! But I've seen a lot of subpar reviews, so we shall see how it all turns out!

I wanted to like this book more. I enjoyed how the author showed the parallels between the Salem Witch Trials and the modern day mystery illness plaguing a privileged all girls Catholic school. But the characters were dull, the dialogue fell flat a lot of the time, and I thought the ending was overly predictable.

But, I will say this, Howe does her research. I learned a lot of interesting facts in this book about illnesses. #24in48 #readathon

EmilyAnne I felt the same way about this one! I wanted to like it more than I did. But the research was definitely there 7y
Dorianna @EmilyAnne My favorite part of reading this book was googling stuff that was based on real life. That was the book's redeeming quality for me otherwise I would have panned it. 7y
EmilyAnne @Dorianna Agreed! I sort of understood where she was trying to go with the book, but it just didn't get there for me 7y

How can I get any reading done when my cat has claimed my hand as a pillow? 😂😂😂

JanuarieTimewalker13 @EmilyAnne your cat is so beautiful !!! 8y
EmilyAnne @JanuarieTimewalker13 I'll have to post a picture of her sleeping with all 4 legs in the air, she's a little more silly looking then! She's a sweetheart though 😊 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh yes!!! Oh it's so evident she's a total sweetheart. Cats like her make this planet a better place! They're fantastic beings! 8y

I am so disappointed but I have to put this one down. Great idea, but the dialogue rang false - in the 1706 sections and 2012 sections.. None of the characters sounded real to me, and it was all exposition. Nothing subtle about this book, and it is way to long to already be annoyed. Too bad.

Started this today. I am so over the disgustingness of summer and ready for fall. Yay witches. 🎃

CherylDeFranceschi Witch books forevah! 8y
courtney Yasss bring on all the fall reads! 🍂🍃 excited to hear what you think about this one. Weirdly enough, I just bought it from the Dollar Tree in my neighborhood, haha 8y
Zelma @CherylDeFranceschi yes! I don't care for YA paranormal but adult witches and urban fantasy rock! 8y

CherylDeFranceschi I completely agree! 8y
Zelma @courtney I thought Howe's first book was entertaining so I figure this will be too. Nothing to deep but probably a page turner and cool topic. I am a sucker for Salem with trial books and slightly creepy. I can't wait to bust out hot beverages, fleece and Shirley Jackson! 8y
BekahB Yes!! Over the weekend I broke and watched Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus a little early 😂 8y
PatriciaU I am pretty sure this was inspired by a real life incident that happened in LeRoy NY where girls at a high school all developed tics and exhibited bizarre behavior. I live nearby and remember *everyone* had a theory. Now I'm wondering what happened to those girls. 8y
Zelma @BekahB nice! I love holiday movies and Nightmare Before Christmas is a favorite. We watched all of the National Lampoon vacation movies on July 4 including the Christmas one. ❤️ ready for sappy movie season! 8y
Zelma @PatriciaU yes! It's a disorder but no one knows anything about. Mr.z told me about it when he heard the title. He seemed disappointed witches were involved in my book. 😆 8y
Bette 🍂🍃🎃 talking to a friend today about the upcoming Halloween haunted house...something must be in the air. 😀 8y
Zelma @Bette definitely something in the air! But no haunted houses for me - I'm a total scaredy cat. 8y
BookishFeminist Yay witches indeed! My favorite season 🎃 8y
Zelma @BookishFeminist I really want something pumpkin now. 😆 8y
BookishFeminist @Zelma Me too! Pumpkin pie sounds delicious right about now 8y

Teenage girls. A mysterious illness. A town scared for its children. Who or what is to blame?

I thought I knew the reason but then I doubted myself. But is the simplest answer the truth? Is history repeating itself or is there really magic in this world?

If you like The Crucible or The Witches by Stacy Schiff(I highly recommend this book), then give this book a try.

Started listening to this yesterday. I'm glad I recently listened to The Witches: Salem 1692 by Stacy Schiff. I highly recommend Witches which basically gives you the real story about the witch trials and scare in Salem. Very interesting. I listened to it on a road trip and I tend to listen to nonfiction that way.

Pickpick

This book fluctuates between the 1692 Salem witch hunt and a 2012 high school incident. It isn't about witches, it isn't scary in a traditional sense, and the pieces don't directly connect - which may leave some readers disappointed. However, Conversion's core is hysteria. How fast hysteria spreads, the loss of logic while succumbing to chaos, and the diffusion of responsibility to take action. To me, that is scary enough!

ReadingOver50 Sounds intriguing 8y
